Show THEY ARE ALL MIXED OP County Republicans do not Know Where They Are At SOME OF THE CANDIDATES SHEIUFFS OFFICE I UjEGVUDEl AS BEING A CHOICE FLU County Commissioners Want to Succeed Suc-ceed Themselves Docs the County Attorney How the Australian Aus-tralian Ballot Is Going to Work Some Cheering News from the City of New York Tlie Finsuicinl News Is Giving 11 Bryiui Its Support An Open Letter to John Iiu Tny lor Tlie Answer That John C Gruhniii Ueceived from the Silver Men at Thistle All the Political New of the City The Republican who is seeking a nomination nom-ination for an office at the hands of the county organization this fall is in a quandary There are several of him too and he does not know just where he is at Because there may be two conventions conven-tions in this county after all That has been said and done The McKinley McKin-ley men may hold one all to themselves and the Independents may also do a little work of that kind Matters are in a state of chaos Nothing definite seems to have been agreed upon although the old time workers in the party who I I are out for the gold standard candidate candi-date are making herculean efforts to have the matter adjudicated satisfactorily satisfac-torily so that the spoils of the county offices can be distributed without a clash and the workers aforesaid and hereinbefore mentioned provided for The McKinley men seem to have shown their hands a little too prematurely prema-turely in this that the Argus the organ or-gan of the faction in its issue of last Saturday came out boldly and invited all Republicans who were not in favor of the man who lives in the city named after a Chinese town to go to the Democratic Demo-cratic party as the sate was wide open to receive them This brief article arti-cle was taken as a challenge by several of those who are interested in the success suc-cess of silver and there is but little doubt that many of them will follow the example set by Hon W L Dykes and join the Democratic party No one save a person who has been around the circle and talked with the old time Republicans knows the disaffection dis-affection which prevails Nearly every Scandinavian in the city is for Bryan and Sewall and it would take but little urging to bring them all into the Democratic Dem-ocratic fold for the entire ticket from electors to constable Not only the Scandinavians but the Germans are coming over in great numbers num-bers and for once in his lifetime Bruce Johnson cannot say that he can deliver the colored vote Editor Taylor with his little Broad Ax has been doing a lot of missionary work and the class he represents is becoming aroused to the situation Up to date the Republicans of this city have done nothing for this class of voters although they have had ample opportunity of showing their appreciation of the services which have been rendered in the past Hence the quandary alluded to Even should all factions of the party unite as to local matters i is not at all likely the ticket nominated would win The many dteaffections endanger its success suc-cess more than the most sanguine are willing to concede The e are several fine offices to be filled this seera sheriffs is perhaps per-haps the most important Harvey Hardy the present incumbent wants to sacceed himself but will be bitterly antagonized by men in his own party convention not because he has not made an efficient officer but by reason of the fact that after he was chosen there were several of the ward workers whom he forgot to remember Some of his appointments did not suit either and those whom he neglected like Achilles are sulking in their tents and will come into the open only when they have il a chance to knife the candidate alluded Adam Paul is still hammering away Adam is after the nomination and after it hard He buttonholes more people every day than any other two men in the city Adam has a mysterious man ner when he captures a victim He get him off all alone and pours into his ear a tale which must be harrowing in the ertreme if the countenance of the person per-son approached is any guide Adam may get the nomination although those who oppose him say Nit One thing is certain he would be a very good man to run against Joe Y Smith is making a careful can vais of all his friends and several other men He has a strong following and i is composed of the boys who live I down in the wards where they pack the primaries and elect the delegates He is liable to go into the convention and raise merry hades with some onas chances Billy Lynch was a candidate some time ago but he isnt any more He said so a day or two ago Asked if he was going to run for sheriff he replied I that he was not a candidate repled any political office But you would take the place if it was tendered you Office does not come that way was the reply I repeat I am not a can didate for any political office Then William walked away and talk ed horse to Jake Moritz Unless something turns up in the way of a candidate who is1 I as yet unknown John D Spencer has a cinch on the nomination for the office of county treasurer which will in the future have I with it the duties of collector John is entitled to the nomination by reason < of precedent and will doubtless get it although there is said to be a dark horse or two in the stable who may be brought out Penn Lynn doesnt want the place after his term expires and will not have I Penn has a good thing in the bank Al Reese is the man who is expecting I to walk away with the nomination for the dual office of clerk of the county I court and district court In line with the usages of the past Reese ought I to get the nomination easy but there is going to be a stumbling block in his way in the perton of a man from Sandy The outside precinct say they want something this time Bingham wants the sheriff but no one there seems to crave the pleasure of running on the Republican ticket so it is likely that our own Colonel Squires be may prevailed upan to go back there to live and ruq for clerk Squires iint saying a word I but then he is sly devlish sly you know and he will bob up when he is leavv expected as he always does Charlie Stanton hasnt the least idea of going in for another race He Is like Tom Reed knows when he has enough Dick Conely by ream of his long experience ex-perience in the office is fitted so his many friends think for the place which will be made vacant by the retirement of William Lynch But Dick hasnt said a word as yet Harold JMtt so rumor mor says would be delighted to do the work for the salary attached but Harold Har-old isnt successful in politics poltc somehow some-how He fails to conneotgets left sloughed off as i were falls down misses his train and makes a general I bobble of the whole works So Harold is out of 1 I GeddQ Roberts and Christopherson I I I I > > f all want to be vindicated That is to say they desire reelection They are in the hands of their friends right now That court decision which ruled they must replace the mileage The Herald had so much to say about last summer musc be made up some way True Roberts might make it back at his hotel ho-tel over in Bingham Chris might sell fruit trees and Geddes could draw dividends div-idends from Barton Co but that isnt the point All that would come anyway any-way The coin must be obtained from the people Now that the bonds lave I been readvertised and there is a good chance of sellng them it would be unfair j un-fair to have some other men handle the skads That is the argument used But Roberts Christopherson and Geddes will come no closer to being elected than will Simon Boliver Buckner in presiding presid-ing over the next United States senate sen-ate I ateBy the way it is stated that our own I Uncle A F Doremus wants to fill one of the places and is quietly grooming groom-ing himself for the position now held by the famous man fro the Third Whittemore is in the field for re nomination although he is saying but little He is going to run on his record rec-ord I is a brilliant one as > everyone knows Hasnt h brought back Hay ken and tried him with the result that the gay and festive furniture man is now at liberty Didnt he snatch Bamberger and Morris into court and compel 1 tem to prove to the satisfaction I satisfac-tion o the court and jury that they were not guilty of boodling Didnt he I get experts from Chicago here to affirm I af-firm that the old county court ha paid two prices for everything it bought I Wasnt he the cause of their getting a whole lot of the countys good money and putting the same in circulation Chicago Didnt he go east and buy a elevator Was it no Ire who arranged ar-ranged for the sale of bonds all of which would have been all right had not the buyers flunked Cert Whit temore is going to have some opposition opposi-tion in the person of George Nye the silvertongued orator O the last house who has been in his office for sometime some-time resigning a short period ago because be-cause he did not want to stay there and the go out and make the canvass am act which made Whit especially warm under the necktie Nye has a good showing for the nomination because be-cause he has the gang wid L and he will make the tall sycamore from the First precinct hard to catch ere the ides of November ± reach us Harry Joseph is saying nothing but sawing wood Up to this time people have forgotten there was such an office of-fice as county engineer This was right in Harrys hand He did not want them to remember anything until un-til after the time fo thinking was past Then he would have slid in and took the peaches without a struggle Harry doesnt like struggles anyway They cost too much and the emoluments emolu-ments of the office are net so great as to warrant a man ars wrrt man spending a years salary in getting elected Up to date I Harry i the only man in the ranks of the G 0 P who has signified a intention in-tention of making a fight for the place but there is plenty of time Mont Fisher considers he is the logical candidate for the office of county auditor He was appointed by Governor Wells to fill a vacancy and now that he has g the books of the county in good shape he is of the opinion that a reelection is no more than fair I UT to date the feminine portion of I the party has received no consideration I ait the hands of the party mfinvbers They seem to have forgotten that women wo-men have the right to vote and hold i office a well as men As a result there is liable to be trouble In the camp when the convention meets The lady delegates may take matters in their own hands and by a combination with several o the gentlemen nominate a woman o two thus wrecking the hopes o the aspiring candidates S S The Democracy has several candidates candi-dates as well as the Republicans The shrievalty is a plum which several i would like to pick Hugh Watson of i j the Sixth ward is working tooth and nail among those who know him and those who do not for the nomination ExSheriff McQueen is busy talking with men who are his friends and is i making good progress exSheriff Burt is making a canvass among the boys i for the place T P Lewis who ran two years ago and was defeated will I try again Joe Raleigh is being I groomed for the place and there are I several dark horses in the stable All mentioned are good men and the race promises to be c close one all round ii I George StringifellOW is a candidate for county commissioner He Is dev i de-v linG considerable strength and i those who are active in his support 1 point to the fact that when he was a member of the city council h was very watchful o the money of the city They believe he will duplicate this conduct as a member of the county board > Dr Faust the old war horse of the ancient sagebrush Democracy is in the field to and will make a I fight I Andrew Brixen make the race Andre Brxen may mae r i for the office of county treasurer So may C L Hawley who wa the nocn i I inee two years ago The treasurership i I I is going to be a good thing hereafter I I and there will b considerable strife a concerns It But i is early yet a The Australian ballot system is going to be the ruination of the ward worker I this year He can do nothing bU stand a hundred feet from the polls and yaw He will bs able to collar the intelligent voter and tell him how to vote and that is all The intelligerot voter will go inside where free from 5nOrusion he will fix his ballot t suit himself I is a good thing that this is so Hitherto the ward worker has been an infernal nuisance a bore a wart on the body politic A man couldnt g t the polls and g a ticket but what he wanted to see how it was fixed and when the voter had got everything to his liking the ward worker would look over his shoulder and tell him to throw th ballot away and take the one he had In hand Ten the intelligent voter was compelled t I say jam or something which rhymes I with it This yea i will b different I There is only one way in which the Australian system can be beaten It can be beaten but it requires a little shrewd manipulation on the part of i th workers One must first have a I genuine ticket This can be fixed and i the voter takes same into the booth where he remains awhile with the awhie rean wth I ticket w ic has been given him by I the Judges He votes the prepared I ticket comes out with the good one turns it over to the heeler and receives the price agreed up 0 and goes away I The net man repeats But in this state a count cC the ballots would reveal veal a fraud of this kind inasmuch as the tickets will b numbered So it will be hard lines for the heeler I The foflowlng missive explains itself To John Lu Taylor WouldBe McKinley I McKin-ley Candidate for Congress I SirAs an oldtime Republican one who has never wavered in the fight and who is now willing to sacrifice all principle to lay aside aRt commonsense common-sense to voce politician otherwise I shall vote as I didnt shoot REPUBLICAN Among all the financial papers printed on Wall street the Financial News wields the greatest influence It Is authority on all matters of finance and is considered the most reliable of the money publications It is issued daily and reaches the office of every broker and banker in the city of New York The News is for silver In its last issue it says As Bryan progresses westward the crowds that gather to hear him are greater than any heretofore known in the regions where he has spoken and a they are composed largely of Republicans Republi-cans who have heretofore voted the straight Republican ticket but now announce an-nounce their intention to vote for a change The enthusiasm brought out by his speeches is unprecedented This is easily explained He is speaking on the one live issue on the one thing that every producer in the land has felt the bitter effect ofthe destructive power of the gold policy He is speaking speak-ing not only for the producers of our country but of all gold standard countries and the fact that he la speaking to such great crowds who receive re-ceive him with such enthusiasm Is haying hay-ing its effect abroad The bogus international in-ternational bimetallic league of England Eng-land formed not to advance but to retard re-tard bimetallism Is being shoved aside by the real blmetallists who look to the lead of the United States to restore re-store in the immediate future bimetallism bimetall-ism all over the world It is this that promises a tumble iru highpriced English securities bo stecfc by low interest on money and promises to bring money into trade There is a feeling already abroad that the United States are going to ttirn the tide and that the day of the appreciating dollar is over and is to be replaced by appre elating values in commodities and reflected re-flected in securities of railroads that carry them Our European advices indicate in-dicate a great change In sentiment ia regard to better prospects in Americ growing out of the belief that silver is to win this fall S SS Democratic state headquarters and the county headuarters on State street are being fitted up and will be ready for occupancy today Some days ago John C Graham the editor of the Enquirer at Provo andi chairman of the Republican county committee of Utah county sent out notices no-tices to all the precincts in his baili Wick asking that delegates be sent to attend a Republican convention in the gold interests at Provo The appended is the reply he received from Thistle and shows the feeling in that section Thistle Sept 6 J C Graham Chairman Republican County Committee Provo Dear SirI am surprised at you asking ask-ing to have delegates appointed to attend at-tend a
