Show L BY ASSOCIATED PRESS f A Report That Simply Adds to the i Mystery CHICAGO March 27It has been j ascertained from the books of the Northwestern railway that the box f SS containing the corpse which was sold s unclaimed freight at the auction sale was shipped from Salt Lake city Officials there have been communicated with in the hoe of identifying thee the-e body v A singular cIrcumstance that the 1 fame G M Morgan belongs to one ot the most efficient officers of the United States secret service He has been in Salt Lake and was quite well known there Still it is quite certain he was not in Salt Lake at the time of the shipment of the body for he was in Chicago during the Worlds fair The man whose body was found packed in the box was murdered This was settled definitely this afternoon When the coroners physicians held a pst mortem examination on the body at the county morgue Two large holes had been made in the skull and either would have killed the man The post mortem proved that the body was that of a man five feet six inches high weighing about 145 pounds Judging from the bones the body was i that of a young man about 30 or 35 years of age There were two scalp wounds on the back and left side Q the head Under these scalp wounds were two skull fractures the one on the back being round one inch across the one on the left was onefourth by one inch The bones in these places had been driven into the brain The teeth were all sound and all present The hair on the head was medium long straight and dark between There was no beard or moustache The internal in-ternal organs were all in a healthy condition Around the body was a truss made as if in use for rupture The only cause for death found were the skull fractures The police are now endeavoring to find the expressman who called at 166 South Jefferson street last week wth a second box addressed to G W Morgan Mor-gan Matt Rhodes Theory Confirmed CHICAGO March 27 Henry Devere and Bas Marcel appeared at the Armory police station tonight and said they believed the body in the Wakem and McLaughlin box Is that of Joanes Prosper Chazal who disappeared from Salt Lake city o February 18 1893 They have seen the body and feel reasonably certain it is that of Chazel who lived with a woman named Miss Rolande on Franklin avenue Salt Lake city up to February 1893 at what number the Frenchmen do not remember Chazal lived with Miss Rolande as his wife and the men who I called at the police station tonight said she is now in Paris France where she went in the hope that she would be able to find some way to clear up the disappearance of Chazal Devere and Marcel both believe Chazal was murdered and that the motive therefor was robbery as the I jewelry latter was quite well off and carried I is said that a much as two or three thousand dollars worth was in Its possession just before he disappeared disap-peared The men said also that the police In Par have been notified of the disappearance of Chazal and have for some time been working on the j 1 case at the instigation of Miss Rolande who is now living on the Rue d Char tres in Paris I |
