the i t delegation from Box Elder wanted a 1 McKinley man The delegation from i Tooele wanted a man who would ore i for Bryan and Sewall and a senator of i the United States who would stand for le of Lake d Point Captain Stover who was a Republican Re-publican before McKinley was born who a fighting the battles o the S party before many o the delegates fm the county on the north were througih the infantile avocation which r irou te lnfar3e avoto them their start in life was also I a gave candidate tiei1 st i w aso Neither of them were chosen Another other man carried off the honors 1 At this point it may be stated that Stov and McBride a going t vote for Bryan and Sewall and there you have the malk in the Box Elder cocoanut I cocoa-nut The convention was called t order at 1 oclock by a member of the Box Elder contingent who nominatedi ct Charles R McBride fo the position of temporary charman The honor was conferred without opposition and Mr 1 McBride made his speech of thanks I A reading of the call developed the reding o te cl deveope tne fact that the delegates were there forte for-te purpose o nominating a victim to be slaughtered by Hon William G t Nebeker Democratic candidate for the < state senate in the First district and thafc TooeJe was entitled1 to thirteen delegates while Box Elder wus e S titlad to eighteen Thirteen was an S tiiwucky number for the men from along the narrow guage te gag A statement of the chair developed S the condition that Tooele was entitled t by precedent to the nominee this yearS year-S Abram Zundel the oldfashioned gentleman gen-tleman who held down the seat last year having come from Box Elder A PLEA FOR HARMONY The chairman suggested that har S mony prevai and that all acts be performed i per-formed with an eye single to the success suc-cess of the party in the district lest the entire aggregation go rolling in r seething billows of the bouillon of defeat S de-feat Holmgreen of Box Elder was then selected secretary and with sev v cral sheets of paper and a pencil took J his seat with as virtuous an aspect asS as-S the circumstances would permit f The delegates did not seem to crave honors very much and I was a task to get two of them to serve as members aft mem-bers of the committees on resolutions and order of business and on credentials r creden-tials but finally this was done and after a short session in the hallway they reported that all who were there were present and all who were not were absent and that i was a matter of right and justice that those who were present should have the privilege of casting the votes of those who were I absentS absent-S This was agreed to and a brief discussion I dis-cussion was had as to the platform to be adopted I appears that the platform j plat-form adopted by the Tooele county r convention and that adopted by the > Box Elder county convention differed f t in some points The delegates from 5 the last named county thought it S r would be a little rough to ask the senatorial sen-atorial candidate to go stumping atora tS around the country on two platforms i not alike While they did not say so it was evident that they could picture the candidate hustling through Box El d > r declaring for protection and reciprocity re-ciprocity and a tariff on wool while S down in Tooeie he would be telling the r miners that silver was all that was s required for their happiness and prosperity V pros-perity and that until the free coinage 1 f thereof was secured there was no need 6 to think of anything else Such a condition con-dition would be too much of a straddle < c ard would be painful in the extreme r So i was decided to have a piatform t for the candidate which would fit both counties sort of a peg which would t fill two different classes of holes I The convention then adjourned until un-til 130 and the committee prepared for the catchascatchcan match with the dictionary te ictonaA A PLATFORM At the hour named the delegates assembled S as-sembled The temporary organization was made permanent and the committee com-mittee on platform reported that the S onvention sought to adopt a declara S Son in favor of free silver protection tod reciprocity opposition to a single rold standard and the asking for the tree and unlimited coinage of silver atc at-c iI i ii a ratio of 16 to 1 independent of the action of any other nation Barring the introduction of the protection reciprocity re-ciprocity clause the plank was almost identical with that of the Democratic party platform adopted at Chicago The committee favored the admission of women to larger spheres of usefulness useful-ness but just what spheres were not specified and the matter remains in mater remans doubt a to whether it was meant that woman should be permitted to work In the rolling mirls and foundries of the land or be eligible to positions on the police force Joseph Erickson of Tooele cast the first firebrand at this juncture He offered of-fered an amendment reading that it be the sense of the convention that it consider the financial issue the prominent promi-nent one of this campaign to which all others are subordinate that the delegates to the convention vote for no man who would not endorse this feature I fea-ture and that no candidate be nominated nomi-nated for the state senate who does not declare he is going to vote for Bryan and Sewall I This motion agitated the members from Box Elder exceedingly They grew sick and faint at heart One could almost imagine that he could read in the faces of the entire delegation dele-gation a thought which crystallized in words would read I wish these damn reporters were not in the room so we could fight this out without having hav-ing the whole world know it I so proved too for Pitt the leader of the Box Elder crowd came over to The Herald man and asked if he did not think it would be well to have the wel newspaper men retire re-tire while they discussed the question The negative reply he received came so quick it took the questioners breath toers but he rallied and aSL d the Tribune man the same question with a like result suit The Box Elder delegation conferred con-ferred together and decided they must have seclusion and a motion was made moton mae to have an executive session Captain Stover kicked and kicked hard He said he didnt want t have any star chamber 12 oclock midnight session He was a Republican ere some of the members present were out of the fourcornered garments of infancy and he had never been ashamed to make his fight in the open He did not want the doors closed Mr Erickson protested against making mak-ing a HocHoo lodge of the convention He wanted the reporters present THE REPORTERS RETIRED But the Box Elder men with their little 18 votes earned the motion and the press retired to the next bedroom and listened to the proceedings over the I transom which was conveniently open I I was a hot old debate that made on the amendment to the platform i Pitt who by the way is a energetic youth didnt want to do anything which would split the party in two He wanted want-ed harmony with a big H The platform plat-form adopted was Republican in all essentials es-sentials One person followed another until I was finally proposed to take counsel i of Bishop Wrathall and a few other people from Grantsville and vicinity in but right there old man Stover got his work He would not for a moment entertain the idea of having any outsiders out-siders come into the executive session Then the party went at the amendment and finally reduced or diluted it by making i read that the candidate should pledge himttlf not to vote for any man for United States senator who would not stand for the free and un limited coinage of sliver above all tin The doors were then thrown open and the press and a few spectators came in The amendment offered by I Erickson was defeated by the Box Elder 1 El-der delegation and one or two of the i Tooele delegates and the amendment I offered by the Box Elder delegation I carried A BOLT Mr Erickson then stated that under the instructions he had received from the convention held in Tooele he would not sit after the action taken He I I would withdraw Captain Stover said j the men he represented would not 1 stand the work there and he too bolted I Judge Burris made a speech apologizing I apolo-gizing for remaining and then the con 1 vention went into the matter of nominations i nations ntons j I j Burs nominated Charles R McBride S of Tooele John B Gordon presented the name of D T Powell of Lake Point Then it was that the delegation from Box Elder came in and flummigasted i the Tooele people Pitt said that while I for the county from i it was customary frm which the candidate was to be selected I to present the person in this case Box I Elder felt that a grave duty rested upon its delegation and would perform it I had a candidate from Tooele county in the person of a man who was understood to be for silver and all w other ills the flesh is heir to that is to say he was for silver and protection j I and reciprocity and the admission of women to larger spheres of usefulness largr I He nominated John C Sharp of Tooele j SHARP WINS i i Sharp was elected by a vote of 16 to 15 over McBride This was funny too The delegation from Box Elder it will be remembered had the authority to cast the full vote of the delegation IS four of them resent in all There were the present pres-ent Inasmuch as it required a majority ma-jority of the four to cast the vote Sharp should have received 17 i the vote was straight on a majority proposition I l the delegation was equally divided Sharp would have received only 9 The 1 fraud was so apparent on its face that I Ike Niebaur became disgusted Gentlemen sid Ike I came here I representing a constituency of miners f who wanted to vote for the candidate But this monkey business makes mesick me-sick I want to say right here that I bolt I I Ikes remarks did not reach the ear i of one delegate who asked they be le posited They were with emphasis Then Ike added And I shall take I great pleasure in voting and working gret forthe other man Then he went away and the convention or what was left of it gazed at itself Then it adjourned If any one should ask you W G Nebeker will be the next senator from the First district and will have a big majority He is a Bryan and Sewall Democrat and believes in the free and unlimited coinage of silver before any thiTUT eWe and will work to that end |
