Show FAVORS WOMAN SUFFRAGE I SEYMOUR B YOUNG GIVES HIS VIEWS OX TiE SUBJECT Those Against I Guess I Will Be I Menace to Statehood Those Ka vorlncr I Guess That I Wont To the Editor of The Herald Dear Sir The Tribune of yesterday morning says Then came Roberts the champion against woman suffrage I might be stated that ridicule is not argument and while gentlemen may stand upon the floor of the convention and personally hurl their sarcasms at each other we would still remind all parties concerned that ridicule and sarcasm and personal abuse is not argument ar-gument One gentleman stated that woman suffrage was a menace to statehood state-hood and by his after statements would lead one to suppose that the wish was father to the thought and that this statement was advanced to excite apprehension members in order or-der that equal suffrage might be voted down The member from Davis county finally pleads with the convention not to vote for woman suffrage for fear that the sanctity of home and home life and pleasures will be destroyed and that after the hurlyburly of political po-litical squabbles that members do not desire to be confronted with political politi-cal questions at their own firesides fresides This in our estimation Is the only attempted argument against woman suffrage The member from Davis evidently evi-dently guesses that statehood will be menaced if woman suffrage is allowed but other people have the same right to guess in regard to future conditions He makes reference also to oldtime Issues and says that oldtime party hatred and mistrust will be engendered engen-dered but he is not quite sure as to which party will hold the hatred or mistrust I is a fact that both Democrats Demo-crats and Republicans pledged themselves them-selves to a plank In the constitution for woman suffrage and it would be well for gentlemen to designate which would be the cowards those who kept their pledge or those who cowardlike broke the trust imposed In them by their constituents Wyoming had such a plank in her constitution The president of the i United States did not object to issuing his proclamation for her admission on this account Would the gentleman wish to infer that a Democratic president presi-dent would be any less just or chivalrous chival-rous toward Utah The member from Davis also referred to the state of Wyoming with an odious comparison stating that although she had woman suffrage her morals were not improved referring to a massacre of innocent Mongolians at Rock Springs a few years ago The gentleman might just as well have referred to the recent explosion ex-plosion at Almy in this woman suff rage state In which sixtyone human lives were suddenly stamped out and use this as an argument against woman wo-man suffrage That the gentlemen of both political parties who pledged themselves for woman suffrage were sincere we most certainly believe and consider it an insult to those gentlemen gentle-men to even hint that they were not sincere and that it was not the real intent and determination on their part to keep their pledge which they so readily gave to their constituents and we believe that the menace would come to state or nation only when men go back upon their pledges and leave their constituents to point with sorrow I and shame at recreant statesmen who would thus ignore their pledges and I promises Woman suffrage means the education educa-tion politically of the coming generations genera-tions and that this political education is needed throughout the United States throughout the nations everywhere is i apparent to every thinking mind The member from Davis in one of his early speeches hinted at the proposition that women should withdraw their request re-quest for woman suffrage on account of statements which the gentleman made personally against it But that statement was like all the rest of what he might term as arguments It amounted to merely an assertion and we have faith In women yet especially in the women of this western country that they will still remain true to their colors and still demand as Is their right to demand woman suffrage free and equal right of franchise from the members who represent them in the constitutional convention We consider i time to call a halt that no more personal squabbles be permitted on the floor of that convention conven-tion that no more circus performan ton crcus ecs be allowed that the dignity of the convention be maintained from this time until the members have completed com-pleted their labors and that the officers of-ficers of the convention enforce the rules of order and maintain them Get to work gentlemen and dont waste any more time In personalities Keep your pledges with your constituents Women of Utah stand by your colors col-ors Continue to demand your rights and place on record every member in the convention and let that record show whether men have got the co rage r-age of their convictions or not and whether they will redeem their pledges made to the people There Is no menace men-ace to the state In woman suffrage The menace would now b If men were recreant o their pledges that they IS 0 I the representatives of the people oC Utah were dishonest and as the members mem-bers represent the people the people and members alike may be branded as dishonest and unworthy of statehood if they should allow themselves to be browbeaten into a disregard of such promises Let us have statehood but let us have It as free men and free women wo-men with all their Godgiven rights respected and maintained Very truly yours SEYMOUR B YOUNG |
