Show CLOSE OF CONFERENCE eat Attendance at AH of the Meetings PRES WOODRUFF SPEAKS HIS REMARKS LISTENED TO WITH GREAT ISTBREST I Number o f Other AtUlresscs Made The Atteiulance Was So Large In tha Afternoon That au Overflow Over-flow Meeting Was Held In the Ieetlg Hell Assembly As-sembly Hall The conference of the Church of Jesus Je-sus Christ of Latterday Saints was continued in the tabernacle yesterday at 10 a m Meeting was called to order by President George Q Cannon who announced the opening hymn The remaining time Is far spent there is little To publish glad tidings by sea and by land Suitb Opening prayer by Elder John Henry The choir sang the hymn 0 Tiy Father thou that dwellest In the high and glorious place President Wilford Woodruff was the st to address the congregation He d In brief I ask and desire the faith and prayers of the Saints that while I stand before you I may be guided by the spirit of God This is no idle ceremony for if possessed of all the eloquence of the ancient Greeks and Romans it would be impossible to enlighten a single immortal soul on the principles of life and salvation unless un-less guided by that spirit I have been dependent upon that spirit all my ufe and especially during the time spelt hr preaching the gospel It does not matter mat-ter either what age a man is i he is Inspired by that spirit The last speech made by Father Adam to his children was by the power and under the influence fluence of the holy ghost All of us apostles elders and Saints are dependent de-pendent upon that spirit to guide us aright It might be profitable for us to consider con-sider the powers that be the powers that govern and control the affairs of this earth There is the power of God and his authority and opposed to it the power of Lucifer which has warred against the former since the foundation founda-tion of the world and will continue to do so until the end of time and until tlK destinies of our souls have been worked out Since Lucifer the son of the morning was cast down from heaven that warfare has continued against God and Christ and the eternal sfilVation of mankind From Adam down that power has been manifest in I thteneoDle of the arth in the build infi > f cities and kingdoms The power of vsfod has been manifest too in the raising up of prophets to warn those cities and kingdoms when the cup of their iniquities have been full And the words spoken by the prophets under un-der the influence of that spirit have been fulfilled Jeremiah is an instance of this in his warning of the Israelites und r King Jedekiah The king and the pecple were wroth at the prophet and persecuted him until he felt almost al-most as if he could say This people can all go to hell for all I care but the Lord spoke to him and told him that before he was born hv had appointed ap-pointed him to do the work and told him to do his duty He did so and his words came true in the judgments upon that people afterwards So with all the house of Israel They have all had warnings And we are in the same boat ourselves I was the same in the days of the Savior The powers f against him until the of evil fought unt day of his death Since that time what he said of the destruction of the Jews nineteen has come to pass For nearly hundred years they have felt the yoke about tleir necks and they are not t1eir through with it yet The Prophet John wih I prophesied that on the Isle of Patmos rn angel should fly through the midst I of heaven having the everlasting gos unto the children of men pel to preach chidren That has been fulfilled The Lord raised a man ordained from before up world to bring the foundations of the ward foumlatans of the gospel in the last dispensation II dispensatan warred I to the earth That same power until the against him and Pursued him unti like others he death when hour of his lke ibfore sealed his testimony with fore him testmany IKood little time that in the Ths blood But ltte tme earth he not only organized lived the he upon eartl ganized the church but brought the to the world one book of revelations revelatans been cf the best books that has ever ta mar given President Woodruff spoke of the apostacy which had occurred in great church in of the the early history histar to apostles rose up Kirtland Even apostes Kirtand The dictate to the prophet of God dictte of Lucifer even obtained control rower con-trol over some who had received and testified to the Book of Mormon 01 festifed speak Cowderj whom he had seen over by the Influence of the holy ghost until infuence it seemed almost as If the earth trembled trem-bled and Martin Harris turned against Joseph and said he was a fallen only prophet At one time there was prphet who two of the quorum of the twelve remained true to him At that time the speaker was a member of the seventies sev-enties quorum He had been asked to turn against him but had said No lie would not He had seen too much of the prophet and knew too much of him to do s He saw the others had been led astray and he told them they would go to perdition if they did not repent A good many of them did fall He had seen one apostle stand up in the temple of God and curse the prophet to his face and when he took the sacrament he jammed a piece of bread in his mouth like a ravenous dog and choked over i until he grew black in the face He ate and drank damnation damna-tion t his soul He did not go out and hang himself but he did go out I and drown himself in the river and 4 the water rolled over his body and his 4 soul went to the pit where he could not have the power to curse the servants pwer vants of God to their face The devil is not dead but he is still warring against us Those days of suffering and sorrow have passed but we are not safe till the race has been fully fulfilled work run and we have fulfled our here So we have got to watch or the evil one will yet lead us astray Yet the speaker said he was glad of one thing and that was that those days were passed and would not come again For It is now too near the coming of the Son of Man The Lord has chosen servants to perform his work and he President Woodruff was satisfied they f would be faithful unto death He had heard len testify that they had received re-ceived The ministrations of angels and vet had turned away from the truth But what must be their position The Lord is watching over us and the whole world cannot turn aside his purposes The words of the prophets will be fulfilled ful-filled We are here with a mission top to-p fled and i is a great one We are greatly blessed to live in this day and generation God has called and ordained generaton dained the leaders of his people and they are responsible to him but they need the help of the Saints so let usa all set our hands to accomplish the purposes of the Lord President Woodruff said he had seen transfigured and Joseph the prophet transfgured his face < become as clear as amber This a I I was the last time he was with the of the twelve He then told quorum > 4 Quorm the quorum that every key and power I bad Jbestowedupon them and they t 4Aa L fc < TT I must go forth and fulfill the purposes of God I We should all be united if we do we will be triumphant We need not fear for Zion All will be fulfilled to the letter and Zion will arise and flourish The jes shed the blood of the Messiah and they had to pay the price The Gentiles shed the blood of the prophets and they will have to pay the price And whatever we do of evil we will have to pay the penalty for I we want to know of these things we should read the words that have been written for our guidance for i will I all come to pass The judgments are at the door so let us stand in holy places that wo may escape them He testified to having heard the dumb speak the sick healed the lame to walk and the dead raised to life by the power of God among this people He did not know how long he would speak to the Saints The speaker concluded by exhorting all to avoid puzzling over mysteries such as who God is who Christ is who Adam is and where God is and to humble themselves and seek to observe the common com-mon things of the gospel for in due time these things would be made plain He desired the father to give the Saints power to live up to gve commandmens and all would be well The beautiful song Consider the Limes was sung by Ir Lizzie ThomasEdward iiresiaent Joseph F Smith was the next speaker He spoke of the importance im-portance of the act which had been performed in sustaining the authorities authori-ties and the necessity of living up to that act afterwards It ds just a important as to keep any other of the covenants we have made Notwithstanding Notwith-standing hat we have been called out from Babylon and gathered here we are still very human The doctrine of Christ is one of purity of humbleness humble-ness and of submission to the will of the father The Savior came here humble he performed no great act of statesmanship and led no armies to battle but as the humble Nazarene Naza-rene Ihe preached the doctrine of faith humility and submission rto the will of God Yet he understood the other principles of life as is shown 3y his turning water into wine and I feeing the multitudes on a few loaves and fisV He came to teach the way to eternal life His words were simple and easily to be understood under-stood He taught a the greatest commandment love God with all by heart and as the next ito love thy neighbor as thyself I all did this l would be as i was when Joseph Smith told a man that he taught the people correct principles and let them govern themselves There would belittle I little need of couilts and other forms of government then President Smith spoke of the deleterious eterious effects of drugs upon itihe leterous efets drug upn le body and exhorted all to keep the word of wisdom Yet the greatest pant of the crime i to hear the commandment com-mandment and then not observe it He deprecated the fact that advertisements isements had been flaunted In the face of the conference which advised people < to take something ito their injury in-jury He advised all parents to teach their sons the danger of learning a habit that would enslave them Afternoon Session The opening hymn was given out by President George Q Cannon The chair sang Hark ye mortals Hist be still Opening prayer was offered by Elder El-der Joseph E Taylor of the Salt Lake take presidency The choir sang the anthem Lift up your heads I President George Q Cannon was i the first to address the meeting He I read a portion of the seventeenth chapter of John where the Savior is I praying to the father concerning the I disoiples whom God had given him I He had always thought this one of i the grandest prayers ever uttered I No doubt the Savior utstered many I prayers that could not be recorded I I by martal pen But this has been i i recorded and come down to us I the Latterday should be dear to Laterda Saints The great characteristic of this people is union That is what than other gives u a higher standing I people and is one of our chief characteristics char-acteristics This prayer was heard in I regard ito those immediately associ Io I ated with the Savior and dt holds good until today We can thank God in respects that unworthy a we are many spects yet we have this spirit ito a great extent We have come from organizations many nations and religious tions and our union is as evidence I t3t tans this is indeed the church of Christ It i impossible for us to con n ceive of a greater oneness than that which exists between the father and the son We do not separate them in u worship for they are one God with the holy ghost a their ministering I istering spirit or angel Jesus makes I it plain that they are one So much so that many cannot understand how they can be one God and yet have two personages With an ordinary father and son there are two individuals differences between them But with in feeling difereces sentiment the Father and feelng are one In all the life of the Savior is seen the entire devotion to the father and submission to his willPresident Cannon read from the Doctrine and Covenants concerning Daotine the fall of Lucifer He was much thought fal of and was mighty in the councils of heaven So much so that when the plan was discussed for our coming on the earth he had a plan to subniJt I was not accepted But so attractive was it that onethird of s the hosts followed him The difference differ-ence between hh and the Savior was submission of the lat in the entire submisson IGt ter to the father Everything writ ten concerning the Savior indicates that i his plan had not been accepted he would have submitted to the one that was Lucifer not being one with the father sought to wreck everything every-thing because he could not have his own way Since the days of Adam when he could obtain power over men they have manifested the same spirit beginning with Cain down to the end of the Bible And the same in the Book of Mormon We in our own organization have seen the sam spirit and its fruits It is history repenting re-penting itself in the church Some seeking for the spirit of union and love and some rebelling and seeking to have their own way The latter spirit wrought the destruction o two races on this continent the Jared Ites and the Nephites The only trouble tat ever came upon the latter lat-ter came through the spirit of rebellion re-bellion which spirit finally wrought their destruction as a nation AU the trouble that has come upon us the Laititerday Saints has come from that spirit and if we only remain unite we can withstand the world and the powers of darkness But when dissension dis-sension steps in hen there is cause for u to tremble if we ever do tremble trem-ble because that is the only way that trouble ever will come upon us Union ought to be the keynote of the people as it i the corner stone of the superstructure of the church Some men believe that rebellion must be exerise in order t be independent indepen-dent The speaker was thankful he had not felt that way He felt much better and was just as independent when obedient There are three men over anis church The president and two coun sellers They are each presidents but one holds the keys They are fallible men But when he who holds the keys speaks by the spirit it is the word of God to this people He speaks in conjunction and with the counsel of the other two How is it with the first presidency Those Who know us can say I does not do for u to be opinionated but ito hold our hearts opinianate open manifestations of the holy spirit I like my own way but I do not like it enough to want it in opposition op-position to hat of my brethren I is our duty to be united and when two think different from one that one not should say I am with you and let any feeling disunite them An inferior plan with union is better bet-ter than a better plan without it And when we are united God will help us and if we are pure and unite upon any policy he will carry it through and bless u in i And he will supplement us with his infinite wisdom and power There have been men like Joseph Smith who towered above the multitude We are all different dif-ferent like the stars Ocoasdonally God sends out a spirit that is like a fd meteor among the other stars Joseph was far ahead of his church Better WtS fr is i to give people those principles which gve will receive and obey There are things that the leaders understand un-derstand that ithey could not give to the people for it is better to give them those things ithat they can understand un-derstand and will not rebel against enL Line upon line precept upon pre The speaker said he did not know of three men that were more united than the first presidency But he felt his dependence upon < the Lord His own feelings shrank from accepting accept-ing the responsibility but it was the Lords will It was not for their own glory ithait the twelve apostles and other authorities should ask counsel There should be union between presidents presi-dents and their counselors Counsel should not be given only by the united consent of the others I is just as necessary hat we should he united in counsel as that we should be sound in doctrine There must be union The Syithian king told his boys to break a bunch of arrows and they could not but separately they were easily broken S truth us united we are strong baken No man should think that any one of the first presidency would give any but the united counsel coun-sel of l With this spirit we will all be filled with love and things will run smooth with us Why contend about a principle of truth Our contention can not change it We can not change something in the past or in the future or a matter of doctrine by contending about i We should not dispute with our brethren breth-ren because God has forbidden it Some say a man is a policy man There Is a good policy and a bad policy I is a good thing to have a good policy and a wise one and follow i out Brethren and sisters let us not argue ar-gue We should not stand by and hear false doctrine but when we try to set them right we have done our duty and should let it go When ever you see anyone attacking the octrine and telling lies and tell the misrepresentations you can tel adversary is a < t work This L the way he works and will do until he is bound by not having the power to do so We are above the iplane of the world and are trying to raise them to our level and we are continually being raised ourselves by the spirit of G We should strive to b pure and try to raise others too The seer closed b urging l to profit by the floods of wisdom poured out upon them b the teachings of the prophets Joseph and Brigham and John Taylor and President Woodruff and grow and increase in power and knowledge that they may be saved in the kingdom of the father President Woodruff spoke concerning the early history of the church The adversary came in and obtained power over nearly all the twelve apostles as he a related In the morning I is true that many did not go 5 far that they could not repent but where were they They had fallen like lightning and lost their positions We cannot serve God and Mammon but every one must choose between Those days were days of sorrow He prayed then if he ever did that the father would keep h in the faith We must be united and bear off the responsibility that rests upon us We must be united not find fault but must press on and the war of the prophets will come to pass cme ps The speaker closed by exhorting the role to follow the instructions of the servants of God and not contend one with another or allow any principle to divide them and the blessings > ot God would rest upon them The choir sang the anthem Grant us peace 0 Lord Benediction was pronounced by Patriarch John Smith The conference was then adjourned for six months s Overflow Meeting As the tabernacle was filled almost to suffocationr an overflow meeting was held in the Assembly hall and yet there were thousands who could not get within ether building Aipostle Brigham Young presided The services were commenced by the Temple choir joined by the congregation congrega-tion in singing Redeemer of Israel our only delight de-light Prayer was offered by E D Wool ley leyThe The CoIr next sang Great G attend while Zion sings The joy that from thy Te frm presence springs Apostle George Teasdale was the first speaker To be truly converted to the truth was the first essential to a true Christian life But owing to the fact that gross darkness covers the face of the earth conversion was difficult When people were truly converted con-verted to the faith o the gospel they brought forth the fruits of faith the works of the gospel of Christ in their lives The Savior had promised that all who received his doctrine should know whether It were of G or of men Through this promise Peter Jtould answer the Saviors inquiry as Hff who he waswith the testimony f J that he a the Christ the son of the and living God Upon this spirit power of revelation Christ had built his church as he declared unto Peter A this spirit of revelation and testimony = testi-mony was again restored to earth and the elders and messengers < G were sent abroad to all the world 10 call all men 10 repentance condemnation would follow the rejection of this testimony timony and the light of the gospel The only way t retain the spirit of God in our hearts was to seek i by faith and prayer and live for it by keeping in harmony with the righteousness right-eousness of G The spirit of the Lord and the testimony of Jesus would be denied to no man who seeks for It and would make himself worthy to receive i Love unity humility and harmony were earnestly enjoined upon the pe ple of God Member of l quorums societies and organizations should learn to love one another and act in unison and harmony i all things The referred to the succ speaker refere t te successful success-ful colonization of the Saints in Mexico Mex-ico That government had been and was very kind to the Mormon people and had fostered and protected their interests and God was blessing the naJtion In return I tha vicinity of our Mexican settlements were thousands thous-ands o the seed o Israel the Laman I Ites and the day was not far off when they would become identified with the work of the Lord Elder Edward Stephenson was the next speaker The Church of Jesus Christ of Laitterday Saints was organized or-ganized by revelation from heaven Neither Joseph Smith nor any other man could have established this work without divine revelation The speaker gave a brief outline o the early history his-tory of the church and related the Incidents In-cidents which led to the discovery of the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated also the early visions of the Prophet Joseph Smith The great latterday dispensation of the gospel ushered in b the Prophet Joseph Smith he said embraces the gathering of the Jews and Israel from all lands t the home of their forefathers I fore-fathers in Palestine As a preparation to this work at a early day in the history o this church the late Apos tie Orson Hyde was called and went to the Holy Land and dedicated it anew for the gathennng of Gods chosen people and by the power of the priesthood he blessed the land that jt should become fruitful and productive produc-tive and a lit abode for a numerous people The Jews would continue to gather to that land until Christ would come when they would be converted ta him Apostle Abraham H Cannon said he I deplored the evils of this fast century There was safety in the old methods Evils existed i modern society which were almost unknown a century or two ago Easy divorce was a prom nent evil that was growing to an alarming extent and it had the ten dencv to bring disrespect upon mar dage Divorces were becoming s frequent fre-quent in the west that it was becoming noted a the land of experimental marriages The evils that would follow fol-low such practices with their acoom panying sins would be to the diain egration of society As a people the Latterday Saints should set their hearts against these evils and establish the respect for marriage that is due to that holy institution in-stitution The speaker urged that the young people of the church should marry in their own faith if they hoped for happiness continuity of happiness piness The cntnuit in the marriage state depended upon harmony and unity of companionship ay unit I interests It were better not to marry at all than marry where opposing interests in-terests existed Honorable marriage should b encouraged a it promoted the future prosperity and greatness of our people and the nation and was a safeguard against many of the evils whfich menaced society whfch ae Peace b still was sung iby the chair and the conference adjourned for six months Benediction a r nounced by Elder William Eddington Sunday School Conference The annual Sunday school conference at the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat terday Saints was held at the taber nacle at 7 oclock last evening Assistant sistant General Superintendent George Goddard presided The choir sang the I hymn I Praise ye the Lord my heart shall join I Opening prayer was offered by Wil lam Paxton superintendent u of Juab I The choir sang the anthem High on the mountain tops The roll of stakes showed representa ives from twentythree stakes present The general authorities of the Sunday School Union of the church were unanimously unan-imously sustained Assistant Superintendent George Goddard was the first to address the meeting He said there was 81921 meetng I scholars in the Sunday schools He and his esteemed colleague Karl G I Maeser bad visited the Maricopa and I Bt Joseph stakes and the Mexican j stakes during the month of February held a twodays conference in each I and had enjoyed themselves very much in addition to doing as they believed great good I Elder Goddard spoke of the falling t into disuse of the custom of giving rewards re-wards I was not thought necessary I the children displaying great interest Iin I their schools without these Inducements i Induce-ments j Elder Goddard closed by invoking the blessing of God to rest upon all I c i Second Assistant Superintendent l Karl G Maeser expressed pleasure at I the Improvement manifest in the methods I meth-ods and results of the schools The primary department Is the foundation of the work AId in this department I the best and most experienced teachers are needed in order that the little ones may receive the best impression while their minds were so easy of inmpres I sion This work should be conducted I I with the spirit of the great Latterday 1 I work So much so that anyone at tending a Latterday Saints Sunday school would at once recognize i by the conduct of Its members Morality and religion are inseparable Their needs are taught in the common schools The Sunday schools should go farther and teach the pupils to be Latterday Saints Elder Maeser referred to the fact that the whole work was excellent as far as he knew But ttill some mis takes would occur Perfection had not yet been obtained A common error was telling of fables that were untrue eror untre to life They are out of order and a waste of time The truth itself would be much more readily understood Il lustrations are good and they are best which are taken from the lives of the servants of God The choir sang the hymn Glory to God on high Let heaven and earth reply Elder Heber J Grant of the twelve apostles spoke upon what is known as the nickel donation to the Sunday school work The brethren f V6 who travel to the trvel conferences Brothers Goddard and Maeser find It is aer fnd i s neces sary to have money to travel neces pay expenses The falling off of the donations from 1892 to 1894 a been considerable The Mexican schools however stand very high tin respect to their contributions The time for the payment has been changed from the first Sunday in September to the last Sunday in October of each year A good deal more money has been kept by the stakes than the 20 per cent that they were entitled to and in ad dition more than they sent was returned etcElder re-turned to them in the shape o books Elder Francis M Lytman of the twelve apostles talked regarding the ten commandments I is not good to learn everything parrotlike jut go by the words but it is a good thing for ever scholar to know these the oldest old-est code of morals ifor the guidance of mild r Is for every man whether j I V he ba a Christian o not These IM were given to Moses and are the bet that have ever been or could be furnished fur-nished for our guidance Elder Lyman read that portion of the twentysecond chapter of Exodus which contains these commandments and commented upon the necessity at the keeping of them by every one especially es-pecially the Latterday Saints I Apostle Abraham H Cannon said the officers leaders and teachers should be exemplars in everything We should be toe t lead the children in the paths ofjfjghteousnese We too often give teachings to children that we dO not carry out in our lives He spoke of a teacher who could not talk very well in school to his class but obtained the love of the scholars and by so doing made a good impression upon the class because they saw he carried out the principles in his life S with us we should endeavor to lead the little ones by living the principles of truth President George Q Cannon made a few remarks regarding work in It h missionary field by the gospel being taught to children and through them to their parents This i very likely t become a important factor in the spread of the work President Cannon referred to the Sunday school card on the Lords supper sup-per The answer given there is that our sins will be forgiven and that the Lords spirit will always be with us This Is misleading Baptism is the ordinance or-dinance instituted by the Lord for the forgiveness of sins I may be true that by confessing our sins t our fellows fel-lows in fast meetings and other places and repenting of them and worthily partaking of the sacrament we receive a forgiveness of the minor sins Elder George Goddard referred to the necessity of Increasing the aggregate attendance The best way found was by the teachers visiting certain portions por-tions < of the ward and urging the chil dren to attend The choir sang the anthem Let the Mountains Shout for Joy A vote of I thanks was given to Brother Evan Stephens and Brother Joseph J Daynes and the choir for their services during the conference Benediction was pronounced pro-nounced by Elder Lars E Ejgertson |
