rela-tions of certain parties to the present prosecution it is necessary to refer to some matters of history in connection with the First Methodist church and other churches in this city About thrtj sears ago certain members of theT st church sought to supplant Ir2faDy as pastor by Dr Iliff and falling in this quite a number left and went to he Iliff church The feel < ng in the First M E church growing out of that matter was very bitter and the relations between Dr Mabry i nnd Dr Iliff have never been cordial since Attempt to Oust the Doctor In the fall of the snne year there was an expose of an alleged plagiarism plagiar-ism of Dr Iliff which he attributed to Dr Mabry An attempt to oust Dr Mabry from the First church was again renewed two years ago Three prominent members of the Iliff church filed a written complaint with Bishop Joyce charging In fact that Dr iMabry was seeking to build up the First church at the expense of the other Iethodist churches in this city and was thereby causing disturbance in the church relations of Methodists in Salt Lake city Previous to the meeting meet-ing of this conference an official i > 4 > oard of the First church had unani musly requested Dr Mabrys return and the Bishop dismissed the complaint com-plaint and returned Dr Mabry as pastor pas-tor of the First church Another Man Comes In Mrs Rcitly joined thr First church In Febru Ly 1894 Ity letter from Day im O She also brought a strong I Imendatry letter from her former i > ir Some four or five months tg Mrs Reilly joined the Ah there was some criticism criti-cism about her conduct with a man by the name of Scott Karns and this being reported to Dr Mabry lie remonstrated with Mrs Reilly upon the subject It was reported that Mr Karns still continued his attentions to Qfrs Reilly and upon Dr Mabrys advice ad-vice some six weeks ago she peremp torily notified him to cease any further attentions to her Shortly before Mrs labry went on her visit to California she met Mr Karnr who charged her an substance with creating suspicion against him in the mind of his wife End said saidOutfit Outfit to Keep Still You ought to keep still I could do great deal to ruin Dr Mabry r Shortly after thE Karns came to Dr MibryS study in a somewhat in toxic4 condition and accused Dr Jbb interfering with his relations t j1 f I U u k T with Mrs Reilly and made some threats as to what he could do against Dr Mabry During this time Mrs Reilly came frequently to Dr Mabry at his study in the church and counselled with him and he advised her as her pastor in regard to her course of reading of the Bible and other books that she should peruse t help her in her Christian life The fact of these visits was well known to Mr Peterson the church organist and others The lady who keeps the rooming house where Karns and wife had rooms has stated to several perSons per-sons within the last few days that she knew from Mrs Karns before the arrest ar-rest was made that it was to be done that day u i Keeping a W lit eh After Mrs Reilly had cast Karns off absolutely Karns and another man kept a watch of Mrs Reillys visits to the church and some time thereafter went to Dr Iliff at his house late in the night and stated to him the substance sub-stance of their accusations against Dr Mabry and Dr Iliff after hearing the story said if they would come again the next thing he would have two men go with them to watch Dr Mabry and I Mrs Rely He selected Rev Gillilan and Mr C I M Woods the Sunday school superintendent tendent of the Iliff church The understanding under-standing between Mr Karns and his companion with Dr Iliff was that they should be very careful not to let Mr Reilly know what was being done and it was further understood that they should only go far enough to secure evidence that would compel Dr Mabry to resign his pastorate and that no arrests or publicity was to follow Where They Secreted Themselves The person or persons who sought out the chief of police asked him if he could take hold of the matter and go far enough to make a case against Dr Mabry and then have it suppressed Wood in watering secreted himself in a filthy privy at the rear of the church and Rev Gillilan secreted himself him-self in Skewes undertaking parlors across the street Finally desiring to secure better proof than the circumstances circum-stances they had discovered the complaint com-plaint was sworn out by Rev Gillilan and the warrant put into the hands of the policemen so that they would be authorized to break into the room and thus attempt to get further evidence Dr Hire Ilruulit In I I On the day of the arrest Dr Iliff was out of town but within telephone communication com-munication He knew that Bishop Walden a friend of his would be passing through the city the next week After the arrest he telegraphed Bishop Faust the fact of the arrest and urged him to come on here at once from Philadelphia but if that were impossible to authorize Bishop Walden to act in the matter 1 Dr Iliff does not deny that he knew of the proceedings before the complaint com-plaint was sworn out Rev Hunt admits I mits that he knew of i in confidence from Dr Iliff and wanted to inform Dr Mabry of what was going on but I was dissuaded from so doing by Dr Iliff and the C M Woods above re erer to nn Charges Absolutely False I Dr Mabry and Ir Reilly desire to say further that if the officers wRo made the arrest or any others claim to have seen any improper conduct or attitude pf the accused at that time or any other time the same is absolutely abso-lutely false Dr Mabry wishes to state further that in all relations with Mrs Reilly he acted a her pastor in the utmost good conscience and with the sole purpose of aiding her in her Christian lfe Both Dr Mabry and Mrs Reilly wish to reaffirm at this time their former statement that there has never at any time been anything wrong or illicit in their relations rela-tions tons I W |
