Show t i DEFENDER VS I VALKYRIE Inside Facts About the Famous 1 English Flyer n WATSONS GREATEST BOAT or ORIGKVALITY IX THE YAX KED CRAFT I iall yri Is a Pin Keel and Will Spread 1SOOO Feet of Canvaws Afrnlnst the Defenders 1OOOO A Compnrisou WitH the Vigilant I I j I Written I for The Herald I will not be long before the two great I yachts of the age the English and American crafts which are to battle forth I for-th e famed Americas Cup will be launched launch-ed That the fight for the Cup will he the Creates in its history yachting experts I on both sides of the Atlantic agree for S the simple reason that the Englishmen are believed to stand better chance beleved stnd a of L winning i than ever before In fact it is quite easy to find numbers of yachting sharps on this side of the ocean who aro already crying wolf and dolefully prognosticating prog-nosticating a disastrous defeat for the Yankee flyer Great secrecy has attended the construction con-struction of both yachts particularly the English one but sufficient has leaked out from time to time to give a man with the S necessary knowledge to put two and two together enough to enable him to figure out very closely how both yachts wit look and make comparisons of their respective re-spective qualities About eof I t q Wieoml American yachtthe Defender there is little left to I conceal but 8 guarded has been the r work conducted on Aralkyrie HI the I British challenger that next to nothing of an authentic character has yet been Fieii about her in the American papers I The English sporting periodicals have t aided Designer Watson in keeping the details of the craft secret and only the J I I from falling off to leeward It meets the water in a sort of smooth mackerel I shape a form which offers but little resistance re-sistance The keel is thirtylive fee on the top 2 feet across and at th largest I part of the round measures 3 feet It Is 5 feet deep and weighs not far from 6 tons The boat measures 125 feet over all The principal feature of her d lg is the shape of her midsection the all important Im-portant matter of any design The area of the midship section Is not far from UO squar feet and the coefficient of the block or the arc taken by the section from the circumscribed parallelogram is not far from 3 Her displacement Is small hardly up to 140 tons The construction con-struction on account of her great girth and the tying up of the frames and decks in order > that they may hold together cuts into her displacement and is a bit above the weight of other boats of the I racing element This however has been fully made up by using aluminum bronze I for plating Will Be Quick in Stays The yachts wetted surface is not far from 2500 feet and the area of the lateral later-al plane is about 300 square feet By comparison com-parison with the Vigilant the new cup defender though with eight feet more draught and a longer water line has the same wetted surface with about the same I area for her lateral plane The designers work shows a clear gain also over the Wasp and Gloriana whero little thought was given to quickness in the stays This defect has been remedied and the new boat can be well classed a a clever piv oter The lead keel is bolted to the frames with bronze bolts which pro through the cast bronze plates whica fit exactly over the top of the lead keel and are attached to It The angle frames are of steel of the same size as the Vigilants They I are a little thicker howver and consequently conse-quently a little heavier perJ nning foot The frames are spaced twenty inches In the centres The stem and stern posts are of bronze the former being knife edged The aluminum bronze plating averages av-erages onefourth of an Inch though the garboard and iower streaks a little thicker The metal plates which go on top of the keel are cast in three separate pieces the total length being just under thirtyfive feet I Aluminum enters largely into the construction con-struction of the topsides and although I the metal costs 75 cents per pound a cou pie of car loads have been used This is a saving in weight of about live and a half I tons thii lowering the centre of gravity of weight of the hull and giving great additional I ad-ditional power to the boat The Defender should stand up like a church in strong I winds doing away with the big side throwup thus minimizing windage She should sail closer t the wind than am craft yet turned out Thus it can be seen that Lord Dunra vens boat will have 10 surmount intelligence intelli-gence originality and a vast expenditure gcnce of money to win the cup back to England I TIE DEFENDER 3 most trustworthy workmen have been allowed al-lowed In the shed in the Henderson shipyard ship-yard where she is building Every possible pos-sible precaution has been taken to keep the Herreshoits from getting any knowledge knowl-edge of the boat in the fear that the latter lat-ter might taKo advantage and possibly I impro c upon it in the Defender Accurate information from a private I I source has reached the writer about certain I cer-tain features of Valkyrie III which will I 1 be of interest to American yachtsmen i I I They were obtained by a man who had nl I twenty minute look at the Valkyrie III and being a skillPd yachtsman could appreciate I 5 ap-preciate what he saw although of i course he could make no actual measurements meas-urements II How Valkyrie III Looks i The English craft is a finkeel craft I I the fin commencing just beforo the mast step the edge curving slightly before turning From the gammon iron to underneath I I un-derneath the mast she Is straighter below the bowsprit than any of the recent 1 yachts giving her an additional grip fOr length more than possessed by Vigilant I I or Britannia Her midship section is round and full somewhat like the Jubilee Jubi-lee which was rated a better sea boat I I than Vigilant and in windward work was almost perfect The overhangs forward 1 and ail are long giving her no more wetted surface than Britannia or Valkyrie Valky-rie II which proved such an easy victim for Vigilant two years ago Her waterlines are easy and the hull is indicative of great power and the stabih tj to can an Immenbe spread of canvas nore than Watson has ever put on any boat of her size Her mast which was pen was of a solid stick fully 100 feet in length and estimating the other spas E from this it looks as if she would carry in all about 1800 square ftjt of canvas lEer mainsail will probably measure 6200 I I square feet her spinaker 6800 the two jibs 200 ° the topsail 1300 and the club I k topsail 1700 square f tEn t-En y Water Lines This means a boat that will be hard fo i beat An actual line on her speed can not be gained until the first weeks in July when she will meet the Allsa I the latter i lat-ter be conquered the fate of the cup will I indeed be In danger to Americans a the f Aila has made sport of thE Britannia S which in turn Conquered the Vigilant JJefcmlci an Original Craft 5 But while the Englishmen are certainly building a great boat the Herrescnoffs are doing wonders More radical changes and departures are being made in the Defenders construction than the yachting yacht-ing world has ever before witnessed What is more there is absolutely no limit lm i to tho money they are spending and I competent judges say that when the i I Defender is in racing trim she will rep I I reseat an out of IWO Of course money doesnt win yacht races but when i judiciously applied as in the present cast it enhances the chances of victory I I here Valkyrie Il may carry 18000 feet of canvas Defenders spread will be I 2l000 feet Her mainsail will measure K500 feet her topsail 1325 feet the two ilos 230 feet cluttopsail 184S feet and tpfnakcr 712S feet making her the heavl I The Defender will probably first be seen in racing trim In the Fourth of July regatta re-gatta of the Larchmont Yacht club on Jata I the sound with the Vigilaat and the improved im-proved Jubilee as rivals u I i I I t VALICYRIE III AS SHE LOOKED MAY O estsparred > nnsestickcr that ever touched 1 touch-ed the water I II Her Heavy Simrsi The mast IK 102 feet long 20 Inches in I diameter at the foot and 20J inches at j I the top It will be burled 3ust 9 feet I t which shows the depth of the hull body I ft of the Defender The long boom is 102 I feet long the same length a the mast and Is los inches In diameter at the S thickest point I is not hollowed nor are any of the spars The spinnaker pole j Is 72 feet long and 94 4 inches thick in the middle The bowsprit is a solid log 4 feet long and 12 ½ Inches at the foot The gaff Is 6 feet long and 13 inches thick The topsail pole Is 57 feet long and 8 s inches thick The clubtopsail pole is 51 feet long and S = i inches thick and the r topmast is Gl feet 2 inches long and 10 i inches thick According to the measrement rules of the New York Yacht club the Defenders tailing plan will be gauged at 12200 square feet against 11312 carried by the Vigilant In her trial races I Is Interesting to F r compare the Defenders spars with those I at the Vigilant j The Vigilants main boom measures 100 feet and the Defenders Is 10 r et The It Vigilants gaff is 5476 feet long while the i Defenders is C feet The latters topmast k4 top-mast measures Gl feet 2 inches as against r > 8 for the Vigilant According to the figures given the Defenders bowsprit I will be 44feet long tlvpugh how much of r I will bo outboard is not known The V i Vigilant has 3 5 feet of hers outboard and unless all signs fail the new boat will be somewhat shorter which will of course give her a larger mainsail and a slightly smaller head rig The Defenders spinnaker spin-naker pole Is said to measure 72 feet c which will Ije nearly 3 feet shorter than the Vigilants which is 7462 feet D Asi Original Lead l ccl Originality is the one word t se In describing the fenaer generally The shape of the lead keel Is unlike any other = lead keel yet run and t shape shows thorouJrtTstudy > It IB easy of curvature fhro iust enough round t it for a good w rip and is sure to hold tao boat T t |
