Show NO CONTENTION Eli The Republicans of Utah are informed in-formed by the Republican paper which says it is not a Republican organ that there is every prospect of harmony har-mony In that party It says There is no reason to fear any trouble Republicans Re-publicans have their favorite friends of course but there is no serious contention con-tention within the party and when they at last meet and nominate their ticket the chances are a thousand to one that they will go into the fight with the settled purpose of making Utah a Republican state We are to infer from all this that the alarms which have been raised by the Tribune in reference to the course of certain influential members of the Republican party are not as serious as that paper tried to make appear To read its leading editorials for a week or more an ordinary reader would suppose sup-pose that the Tribune had buckled on its fighting armor and was in the fray to kill Its foes were they of its own household They were denounced as boodlers corruptionisis and bribers and their supporters of the Republican press were snarling curs while the common herd of their followers were stigmatized as heelers and strikers But a change seems to have ome over our belligerent contemporary It sees now no reason to fear any trouble It declares that there is no serious contention within the party All its strong language then we suppose sup-pose is to be taken in a Pickwickian sense The Tribune did not mean it The language used was simply its I ordinary way of expressing mild dissatisfaction dis-satisfaction in the course of certain Republicans We observe that this change has come since the action of the Republican I Republi-can territorial committee in accepting the resignation of its chairman and choosing another who will be pliant and tractable to the suggestions and I requirements of the faction headed by the Salt Lake Tribune It thinks it I will now have its way and so there is I I no reason to fear any trouble I We have no doubt that the Republi I cans will go into the fight which is I before us with the settled purpose of making Utah a Republican state But all the same there are two factions in the party which are bitterly at variance vari-ance and to say that there is no serious contention within the party is one of those pieces of bolJ effrontery for which our not over particular neighbor Is noted Harmony is not yet patched up in the Republican party of Utah The contentions within its ranks are serious seri-ous and many It is possible that these conflicting fires will be measurably measur-ably quenched and that a iir face may be turned toward the foe Hut the Democratic party has the advantage I of going into this campaign thoroughly united full of determination with a firm faith in a victory and an enemy to meet whose ranks are rent with dissension and discontent and full of suspicion that fraud and corruption are operating within |
