Show i SEARCII FOR C THE MURDERERS Coughlin and George Are Still at Large SHERIFF HARDY AT WORK One of the Outlaws Is Probably Located t Intense Iiitoreit Taken in the Case r toy Citizens All Sorts of Wild Stories Ailoat Movements of the Sheriff anil Hit Deputies Coiish lins Broken Gun Opinions Divided Di-vided as to the AVncrcabouts of the Fugitives Many Belive They Arc Siill in This City In the matter of the carch for the two boy housethieves the officers are still at sea as they were all day yesterday yes-terday last night and the night before be-fore There is only one possibility that shows any signs of being realized I I alized I is said that the two boys CM at least one of them are hidden in the brush about half a imile from thf mouth of aiill Creek canyon The place is surrounded by deputy sheriffs all citizens and it is hoped io drive the boys out tomorrow The police have completely given up the hunt although every officer is on the lookout and a detail will 4 > e sent to help any party which may come up with the officers The search is entirely en-tirely in the hands of Sheriff Hardy who must pay all the expense out of his personal account I day yesterday yester-day he conducted the search personally person-ally and the county was scoured by a competent posse many of the old I time officers being pressed into service ser-vice I The Herald yesterday continued to retei i praise for the manner in which i had given notice of the approach f the desperadoes and the account of v4 operations of Thursday Captain Cap-tain Dono an who conducted the entire en-tire outdoor expedition said yesterday yester-day that taken all in ali The Herald o had the most curate TIt of the proceedings and that its errors were few and far between Other officers in the field agreed with this Citizens who had obtained a lucid idea of all the movements from The Heralds reports re-ports also were warm in praise of em I i I USUALLY EXCITED Unprecedented Interest in the Case Shown II y Citizens Salt Lake has probably never been i so excited over any criminal case as horsethieves The fact I it has over the horsethieve i that both are well known in this city would b sufficient to awaken an eager interest in their movements Added to this however has been their unprecedented daring They jnave executed a movement i Imost tinjrecedented in the history of crime in this territory rushing down into < the very midst of the officers who were hunting them through the most populous parts of the territory and escaping so far unhurt Even the mos stAid citizens discussed dis-cussed the subject over their breakfasts break-fasts in their stores and on the street j corners The ever present question on everybodys Dips was What is the latest about the murderers Men who are used to planning campaigns after tl > ay are over and thoroughly discussing the mistakes of others told how they would have gone into I the fight and brought the men in dead or ale Old timers in the criminal business spoke of days gone by when itwas the habit < o fatch iiorsethieves friie police department was severely f iticized on all sides and many conflicting con-flicting stories were set afloat I was t fid that with the number of officers tL r t their command and the opportunities oppor-tunities they had the boys should have been brought in Most of th criticisms however were based on imperfect knowledge of the I situation 1 was not reinem bred that the officers went to the Hot Springs with a imperfect imper-fect idea as to whether they were after the right men Until the actually I cane in contact with them their identity was not established Insufficient I Insuf-ficient saddle horses were sent after the identity was ascertained Support Sup-port was not given from the City Creek canyon side on account of the feces I sary scattering of forces in order to coy r the whole country The brush where the men disappeared in the I canyon was so thick that many more could lave hidden themselves in it without being discovered and could have left i without any chance of being be-ing seen The very suddenness of the boys descent on the city their riding alongside a team as an unconcerned pair of sheepherders might their start the inability of the officers to secure sufficient saddle horses and the unfortunate I I unfor-tunate scattering of officers away from the position they took as well as their daring desperation against the necessary neces-sary care of the officers were all elements ele-ments in their favor Their star was in the ascendant There can be no doybt that the police officers did their IxAt to intercept and capture them many taking heavy risks in doing so i J WILD STORIES AFLOAT ii i i Men Located in n Dozen Different I Places During the Day I After a weary vigil all night long i I the many officers sent out from the I I police department and sheriffs office 11 1 returned in the morning ranging from l about 9 oclock to 1 with reports of no success Tne mouth of City Creek canyon the mouth of Dry canyon the 4 amuse where George has been living on Ninth East the house of his step onotlier south of the city and several otJiir places where it was thought pos I ClJ J the boys might be hidden were arded carefully Nothing however c v id f t1c although various stories Jr f k i I were afloat to keep the officers vigilant When the officers came in they were notified that the police were now ready to let the sheriff take up the case where they had left off and the tired I watchers and riders were sent home I to obtain whatever rest they could The most conflicting stories were I about during the day Somebody would father a rumor and before half I an hour t1er i would spread along Main street and into the various offices i Stories were retailed by every man I desirous for a moments notoriety and nothing was ever lost in the I telling Queer Yarns I was alleged that in the meeting i in the morning near the Hot Springs the boys had surprised the officers I and got the drop on them telling them to move on I was then said that I they proceeded to move on for two miles and then started back in pursuit pur-suit of the boys who by this time had moved f towards the foothills I A story also went the rounds that there had been no fighting in City r Creek canyon I was said that the I officers saw the horses and thought the boys were in the rocks beginning to shoot immediately and keeping it up I was explained that the boys had abandoned their horses and struck out for the canyon Both these stories however came from sources hardly reliable and are denied by the I police officers who were in the events I all of whom are reputable men not given to romancing I Another story which had improbability f improb-ability written ulion i was to the I effect that the boys had come downtown down-town last evening coolly walked along j I Main street and taken supper in Gal ligers restaurant tMr Galliger knows nothing about it further than that two strangers answering the description descrip-tion of the boys came in I is probable prob-able that they were sheepherders Another man said he saw a man answering an-swering the description of Coughlin go into the Valley House bar look around suspiciously glance out of the door come back and order a glass of beer Probably another case of mistaken taken identity Reports of Captures All during the day rumors of all kinds came to the sheriffs office and the police headquarters Boys answering answer-ing the description had been seen in all parts of the city and surrounding country Telephone message on telephone tele-phone message came in At one time it was said positively that John M Young and Detective Franks had cornered cor-nered the two men in a schoolhouse at Big Cottonwood where they had been found sleeping and this was implicitly im-plicitly believed for a long time Another report came in during the afternoon that the officers at Bingham had captured the men As Detective McMenamy had come from that country but a short time before this story was discredited Another report came in that the two boys had been seen up in Dry canyon by a man who knows George Some credence was given to this as the officers of-ficers believe that on Thursday the boys were too tired to have traveled very far They were known to have a cabin and cave in Dry canyon where they have hung out before During the afternoon a report came in that the two men had been seen on Fifth South and Eleventh East early in the morning Later on Taylor the dog catcher came to the station and reported that he had been informed by Bishop Warlmrtons son who claims I to know George that the two men had been seen early in the day making I their way south He immediately I started off and went down the westside I I west-side of Liberty park to Tenth South where he says he met a team with a farmer and his wife in front and the two boys in the back and they said I they were going to drive off and get some saddle horses They were going east Soon afterwards another report came in that farther east a wagon had been seen with a couple in front and the two boys sleeping in the back of the wagon Seen Riding West Later in the day another report came in that the two boys had been seen riding I rid-ing west over the Jordan on two dark horses barebacked As this accorded with the theory that they wore making I mak-ing for the Tooele country some credence I cre-dence was given to the story However How-ever as i was known that the sheriff of Tooele county who has done some good work before this was in readiness readi-ness to receive the boys nothing was done These are samples of the reports that came in from all sides I appears that every stranger seen carrying a gun and dressed in a rough fashion was mistaken for the boys and they were positively located all over the city and surrounding country One of the most positive and xcit ing rumors came during the evening I was said positively that a man had come in from Mill Creek with the report re-port that the outlaws had been cornered cor-nered by a posse and both had been killed but not before they had done c little killing on their own account and laid low Deputies Smith and Gibbs and wounded Deputy Steele This of course was laughed at because the two men reported to have been killed Idled a > e far away from the sceneof trouble These are samples of the things that bothered the officers all day NO head or tail could be made of the stories Many bore semblance of truth others were utterly absurd But rumors and stories were all that the officers and public in the city had all day and they were swallowed with avidity I MOVEMEATS OK THE SHERIFF 1C the Outlaws Are in the Valley They AVill Jlniitr The sheriff and his deputies waged an active and tireCess search for the criminals all day yesterday and during dur-ing the night All the canyons are guarded and every avenue of egress seems to be shut so that if the miscreants mis-creants are still in the valley therfc is little doubt but they will be captured sooner or later I The greatest hopes are built on Mil Creek where o man closely answering the description of Coughlin was seen during the afternoon by several people entering and hiding among the brushwood 1 is sup posed from this that the men have separated The neighborhood where Coughlin is supposed to be is Coughln suppoed surrounded sur-rounded by deputy sheriffs and Sheriff Hardy himself returned from that quarter soon after midnight He says if Coughlin is in that quarter he is sure to be nabbed wihlna shn < h I space of time That is where the I sheriff has his strongest force of men Sheriffs officers are also stationed in Parleys Dry and Cottonwood Cotonwood canyons can-yons and at Snyderville Park City people have turned out a large orce over fifty and the passes and mountains all along the line are well manned Sheriff Wright of Weber county and Deputy Sheriff Smith of Salt Lake came down from Ogden at 230 this morning and went < to Mill Creek The mouth of Binghaon canyon is also guarded and the other canyons in that neighborhool are also being I watched so that the hunt is being kept up with all possible beng so Continued on Page 3J SEARCH FOR 1 THE MURDERERS Continued from page L far cerned as the sheriffs department IS con It is confidently expected ithat something some-thing will be heard from Mill Creek soon after sunrise this morning The chase in ithat quarter however is exceedingly difficult Willows and scrub oak grow luxuriantly in all the canyons and along all the creeks for miles An elephant could be hidden in some parts without the least danger of being seen The brush in which the hunted man is now located extends ex-tends for a long distance up and down the creek and is of ithe most difficult nature to be penetrated especially where there is a dangerous man with a gun in it However indications are so good that the man is in there that a great force has been concentrated con-centrated in the vicinity The moon being up most of the night brings a hope that the fugitive will not be able to escape |
