Show SOME SEVERE TESTS COMING Stcnnt Generating Power of Natural Gas to Be Determined Severe tests of < the generating powers of the natural gas which has Just been I conducted from the Lake Shore wells to this city are to be made under the boilers of the Desert Woolen Mills This was the decision of the manage menot of the Salt Lake and Ogden Gas and Electric Light company yesterday and the connection with the mills Is to be made at once The mains pass directly di-rectly in front of the plant on the Third West street side and the laying of the lateral feed pipe will not require much time or effort Tests cannot be made until after the receipt of the special burners which were ordered some time since and should have been delivered some days ago There are to be twentyfour of these burners placed inside the fire box of the boiler twelve on each side and the combined flames will pass between the flues as does that of burning coal in the ordinary ordi-nary firing of a boiler Immediately following the tests with the gas others are to be made with coal in order that mae the relative merits and costs of the two fuels may be determined for once and all The result of the experiments will fix the value of the gas for manufacturing ufacturing purposes and likewise result re-sult in the fisihg of the price of coal All of the prospective heavy users of gas are now awaiting with much interest the outcome of the tests about t be made and upon their success will depend much of the future consump tlon of the natural fuel here In trio city Should the experiments show that more steam can be generated and I maintained with the gas at less expense I ex-pense than with coal then the Sal Lake City Street railroad plant wilt use i in the near future a will also several of the other heavy consumers of coal including the Salt Lake and Ogden Gas and Electric Light company com-pany Of course the company wU make It a point to supply the resIdence portion of the city with the gas before making any contracts with the manufacturing manu-facturing Interests The price of the gas has not yet been fixed for either the private consumers or the large plants but according to the franchia of the American Natural Gas company com-pany the charge cannot be more than 50 cents per thousand feet The flow from the wells has new been entirely cut off pending the making ing of the final connection with the artificial gas house but a large fore of workmen was yesterday engage in placing the regulators and cutoff valves on the feeding mains of the several wells at the Lake Shore fields It is anticipated that the new well being be-ing driven will have a flow of gas within the next few days |
