Show MOBfsLoonSHED1 4 IN SAMOAN ISLfS J i German Consul Incites a Ser ions Outbreak 4i + WARSHIPS BOMBARD 1 NATIVE VILLAGES j I American and British Forces Cooperate Co-operate Against fIataafa f Encouraged By the Germans the Mataafa Faction Surrounded Apia and Attacked the CapitnlSeveral American and British Marines Killed Warships Them Shelled the Native Towns and Several Were Destroyed + CopyrIght 1899 by the Associated Press Apia Samoan Islands March 23 Via Auckland N Z March JThc troubles growing out of the election of a king of Samoa have taken a more serious turn and resulted in the bombardment bom-bardment of native villages along the shore by the United States cruiser PhiladelphIa Admiral Kautz commanding command-ing and the British cruisers Porpoise and Royalist The bombardment has continued intermittently for eight days Several villages have been burned and there have been a number of casualtks among the American and British sailors sail-ors and marines As yet it is impossible impos-sible to estimate the number of natives killed or injured As Mataafa and his chiefs constituting constitut-ing the provisional government continued con-tinued to deify the treaty after the arrival ar-rival of the Philadelphia Admiral Kautz summoned the various consuls and the senior naval officers to a conference con-ference on board the hiladelphia when the whole situation was carefully canvassed can-vassed The upshot was a resolution to dismiss the provisional government and Admiral Kautz issued a proclamation calling on Matanfa and his chiefs to re4 turn to their homes Mataafa evacuated the lIulinuu the town he had made his headquarters and went into the interior Herr Rose the German consul at Apia issued a proclamation supplementing supple-menting the one he had issued several weeks before upholding the provisional government As a result of this the Matanfas assembled in large force and hemmed in the town The British cruiser Royalist brought the lIaUetoa prisoners from the islands to whiCh they had been transferred by the provisional pro-Visional government The Americans then fortified Mull nuu where 22000 lialietoans took refuge ref-uge The rebelsthe adherents of Ma taafabarricaded the roads within the municipality and seized the British houses An ultimatum was sent to them ordering them to evacuate anJ threatening them in the event of refusal re-fusal with a bombardment to commence com-mence at 1 oclock on the afternoon of l1a h 15 OPENING OF HOSTILITIES This was ignored and the rebels commenced com-menced an attack in the direction cf the United States and British consul ates about half an hour before 1 the time fixed for the bombardment The PIiH adelphia Porpoise and Royalist open j fire upon the distant villages There was JIeat difficulty in locating the en emy Wing to the dense forest but St v eral shore viJIagEG were soon in name A defective hell from the Phllld phia exploded near the Ameriran Insulate In-sulate and the marines outside narrowly nar-rowly escaped A fragment struck the leg of Private Rudge shattering it so badly as to necessitate an amputati > Another fragment traversed to the German consulate smashing the crot cry The Germans then went on board the German cruiser Falke During the night the rebels made a hot attack on the town killing three British sailors A British marine was shot in the leg by a sentry of his own party another was shot in the foot and an American sentry was killed at his post The bombardment continuing the inhabitants in-habitants of the town took refuge cn board the Royalist greatly crowding the versed Many pecple are leaving Samoa the captain of the Royalist urging them tc go so as not to interfere with fhe military mil-itary operations The Porpoise has shelled the rillagog east and vest of Apia and captured many boat The Americans and British are fighting fight-ing splendidly together but there is a bitter feeling against the Germans Two men a British and German sub joct have been arrested as spies The bombardment of the jungle was for a time verY hot The British cruiser Tauranga which it is understood was intending to annex an-nex the Tonga islands a section of the Friendly islands in the Pacific was interrupted in-terrupted at Suva capital of the FijI islands by order of the home govern mont I |
