I THE LIVING BONAPARTES I I We are under obligations to Mrs L Cunningham for calling attention to an I inaccuracy which crept into a brief mention of Bonaparte genealogy which appeared In a recent article on French pretenders Prince Victor Who was named by the prInce imperial a successor to his claims was the son of Prince Napoleon and the Princess Clotilde and the grandson of King Jerome of Westphalia Napoleon Napo-leon Bon pares youngest brother When the prince imperial cued in Zululani June 1 1879 as a result of wounds inflicted by the savages the head of the Jlne Avas Joseph Charles Paul known to the world a Prince Napoleon I Na-poleon His two sons survive him and represent the claims of the house of Bonaparte to the throne of r France There is a curious bit of romance connected with Jerome the grandfather grandfath-er of Prince Victor the pretender In 1890 he entered the French navy Three years later found him penned up in a West Indian harbor by an English fleet He managed to escape to the United States and uent to Boston intending in-tending to ship at once for France Owing to the bond of friendship which had been established between this country and his own by Lafayette Jerome Je-rome was a Asocial lion wherever he went He fell violently in love with a Miss Elizabeth Patterson daughter of a Baltimore merchant and they were married on Christmas eve in 1803 This marriage displeased Napoleon who had made other arrangements ar-rangements for his brother The conqueror con-queror believed in holding by marriage ties what he won by the sword He issued is-sued an edict forbidding Jeromes American I Am-erican wife to enter France He annulled nulled the marriage and ordered the ydung man home In 1805 he went and in the following year he married the daughter of Frederick king of Wur temburg But his star like that of I Napoleon began to decline after his I desertion of the wife of his heart
