Thatcher Authon H Lund James Sharp and Joseph F Smith i As trustee in trust for the body of religious worshippers known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday SaintsWilford Woodruff Wood-ruff APOSTLE FRANCIS M L MAN was the first sneaker This people stands as a living witness I to the truth of the work of God as each member has a testimony to that truth for himself without oeing entirely dependent j I upon scriptures ancient or modern 1 These are of themselves good witnesses of the truth but the personal testimony we have is far higher and makes us much more sure and therefore as living witnesses wit-nesses of God we should be careful how we may act on the earth so that our example ex-ample may lead others to a knowledge of the teuth We are full of sin but every year or two some important event arises which makes the Saints look to their souls and reform themselves so that they approach nearer to that perfection which God expects of us There has been no formal reformation in the church since I was 16 years old but such events as I have spoken about every few years and we shall soon grow so that we will draw to us all the honest in heart and the kingdom of God shall prevail all over the world We do not expect to gain temporal tem-poral power in this world but our army of elders are carrying our principles to all the world Parents should be careful that their children are trained to follow in the footsteps foot-steps of their fathers for our children cannot be saved except in the manner that we are to be saved So if families are to be united in the next world the children are to be trained in this manner The saints should also be loving one toward to-ward the other for no man who does not love his brother cannot love God and if one does not love God he cannot secure that spirit which is necessary for his guide The priesthood should set a good example I ex-ample unto those who are in their charge I and they should not be profane nor intemperate in-temperate nor disobedient nor dishonest dishon-est for if they are like any of these they I are not fit to hold the priesthood But if anyone has sinned they can have forgiveness forgive-ness it they will only repent and those who have sinned should take hope from this and try to gain eternal salvation through living better in the future and all of us should endeavor to give the sin ner hope so that he may have fresh courage cour-age APOSTLE JOHN HENRY SMITH was the next speaker He said that throughout the whole of I Israel there is a feeling of thankfulness I that at last the grand temple is finished I and that it may be accepted and good work done in it is the prayer of all Saints and even of many who have not thoroughly thor-oughly kept their covenant This church is marching on to victory and will inculcate incul-cate religious liberty so far that it can never be undermined APOSTLE GEORGE TEASDALE I spoke for a few moments He said he was glad to find his brethren unchanged inspirit I in-spirit and testimony It is very natural I that those who received the testimony should seek to obtain the holy spirit There are three degrees of glory and we will go to the one which our actions upon earth have prepared us for There is only one way in which to gain the full salvation salva-tion that is to become obedient in every way and by becoming as little children as clay in the hands of the pottter Pay your tithing and be blessed and I I Learn the will of God and then do it are two of the best sermons ever preached PRESIDENT WILFORD WOODRUFF said that the authorities would be pleased to continue the conference for several days did they believe that the ceremonies Incident upon the dedication of the temple would not be Impaired thereby I want to say that the speakers who have addressed ad-dressed the congregation at this conference confer-ence have told the truth in their remarks the spirit of God has been with this people peo-ple from the first through all trials and vicissitudes He also said that the last testimony he heard Joseph Smith give was that he had received all the keys and powers that God had ever given and all had been sealed to him j and he then said that he was soon going away and the load would fall on other shoulders and if they did not bear it up they would be damned We did not understand un-derstand this at the time it was spoken but after our prophet was martyred we did and we now realize that this work has fallen on the shoulders of the presidency presi-dency and the twelve and upon the people peo-ple and if they do the work well they will be blessed if not they will be punished pun-ished We are but a small handful compared com-pared with the inhabitants of the earth but we have been set aside for Gods work and on our shoulders rests the responsibility responsi-bility of doing this work and bringing all mankind a knowledge of the gospel God will help us to do this work if we are faithful I hope to live for thirty days lODger to meet with the people in the temple as I have looked forward to this for the last fifty years of my life and I feel that God has been good in allowing me to live so long The conference was adjourned for six months after a benediction by President I George Q Cannon |
