Show BEAR THIS I2 MIND The Liberal organ treats the movement inaugurated on Monday evening for municipal reform with becoming respect The character of the gentlemen who took part in it entitles them to that consideration considera-tion So far so good But in commenting on the movement it says The only question is whether the way proposed by the gentlemen attending that meeting is the best way to do what all concede is desirable We have thought that if the substantial men and business leaders of the Liberal party would come to the front take charge of its affairs and become its candidates the old brilliance of its glory might be restored It is a longing hard to give up and we would much prefer that the campaign might be shaped that way That question will have to be decided by the representative men of all sections of the community If that way is nob the best some other way must be devised de-vised Municipal reform is a public demand de-mand It must be had and at once And the people will have to decide how it shall be effected But this one thing may be regarded as settled The Liberal party if it does come to the front with the Tribune at its head will not take charge of the affairs of the city Any attempt to do so will receive its quietus in short order No matter how hard the Tribunes longing may be to give up it will have to yield to the inevitable The inevitable is that Liberalism must go and with it Tribune domination and selection of the white soiled aud altogether lovely of the city for its officers Two such confessed and irretrievable blunders as it has made are enough By this we do not mean that in the event of a Citizens movement coming to a focus respectable Liberals should be ignored Not at all We do mean that it will not be controlled by the Liberal party and particularly that it will not be run by the Tribune Talk to people anywhere any-where and with but very very few exceptions ex-ceptions that sentiment will be found universal This may be as well understood in the start Any such movement as that suggested and longed for very naturally by the Tribune people will meet with inglorious in-glorious favor And any endeavor to pander to or mix with it will militate very seriously against the best organization organiza-tion that can be effected There must b3 no mistake in this matter The reign qf Liberalism is over It cannot be lifted out of the mire of its own making and placed in the lead any more The people demand a new regime and it will be soil that they are determined not to be cheated or disappointed |
