Show I REPUBLICAN RETALIATION S The Denver Republican threatens the leaders of the Republican party with western west-ern Republican votes for the repeal of the McKiNLEY law That is because so many Senators and Representatives of that party have arrayed themselves against silver It is a retaliatory sentiment that prompts the Denver paper It says If the Republican Senators and Representatives Repre-sentatives from the protected slates of the east vote against silver they can rest assured as-sured that Republican Senators and Representatives Rep-resentatives from the west vill vote against protection if we cannot have reciprocity we can have retaliation Now that is a very low motive If protection pro-tection is right the fact that people who advocate it also vote against silver does not justify an attack anon protection If that is Republican principle Republicanism Republican-ism ought to annihilated A paper that inculcates such a policy is to be despised by every honest man If protection is wrong it ought to be opposed on its demerits de-merits Even if it appears to benefit one class or one section of the country it ought not to he supported by the papers or persons in that section if it is detrimental detri-mental to the general interests of the people at large But the Republican intimates that there are some effects of protection which are notall they have been Jiainted It confesses con-fesses frankly the fact that the manufacturing manu-facturing states of the east have pocketed the lions share of the profits of the protective pro-tective policy and adds that up to date it is no great exaggeration to say that the east got the turkey while the west got the feathers in the banquet of protection J How is this The Denver Republican did not talK like that during the campaign cam-paign last fall Then protection was the only policy that would save the nation from utter ruin Now it almost acknowledges acknowl-edges the Democratic charge that protection protec-tion was for the benefit of a favored class and that the great masses of the people were discriminated against for the enrichment en-richment of that class At any rate it goes as far as to say this So long however as the development of manufacturesin New England and the Middle states increased the Jnarket for Western raw materials and the financial policy of the government guaranteed an increase in the circulation at least partially par-tially proportioned to the growing needs of the country the people of the Vest felt animated by the hope that eventually the benefits of protection would gradually gradual-ly extend across the continent and ba distributed with evenhanded justice among all sections Has this hope been fulfilled The Republican Re-publican says The condition of the entire section westof the Mississippiis almost as bad now as it can become We do not sympathize with any movement move-ment that will attack protection because itsadvocates oppose SIlver coinage It should be overturned because it is wrong and inequitable because it is Class legislation legis-lation because it taxes the masses to build up the manufacturers and because the government has no legitimate power toimpaseatarjff unless it be to obtain the necessary revenue When a public journal advdcates a policy which it believes will bring ruin and starvation to millions in the east > J 0 0 rc i < while it will not hurt people in the vest out of revenge because eastern Congressmen I Congress-men are opposed to free silver it voices the basest feelings of perverted humanity and at the same time it damages the cause it professes to uphold No Republican will vote for silver for fear western papers will attack protection protec-tion Silver needs no such factitious support sup-port It has claims of its own that can be supported honestly fairly and on its merits Hut it ought to be suggestive to Democrats when a rank Republican paper shows up the sectional effects of Republican protection |
