| Show BLAINE A New York provincial newspaper pub lishes that STEPHEN B ELI SS is authority author-ity for the statement that JAMES G BLAINE would shortly announce his decision not under any circumstances to allow his name to be used at the next Republican national convention as candidate for President He says ELAINES letter or announcement an-nouncement will be so positive as to admit ad-mit of but one construction that he never again will be a candidate for the presidency presi-dency This is supplemented by the statement by Mr W J AKKELL of Judge and Frank Leslies Illustrated that Mr BLAINE is about to promulgate his declination as above RUSSELL B HAKRISON is also reported re-ported as saying that the secretary of state will not allow his name to be used again in connection with the Presidency This all seems very positive and will settle the matter with those who want to have it settled in this manner but everybody every-body else will take no stock whatever in these declarations until Mr BLAINE shall issue the promised declination Mighty few believe that he will ever issue it and we aro not among them JAMES G BLAINE is the ablest statesman in the Republican Re-publican party This fact must be conceded con-ceded by all fairminded regardless of their partisan politics He is not only an able man but he is brilliant and what is of importance in these times is the universally univer-sally recognized fact that he is an American Ameri-can through and through To him American Ameri-can citizenship is the grandest thing on earth the glory of the American republic the most desirable This pronounced characteristic makes him the strongest of the prominent figures in the Republican ranks for there is a mighty sentiment abroad in the land that the foreign influence influ-ence in this land of freedom must be reduced re-duced and that Mr BLAINE is the embodiment embodi-ment of that sentiment of reduction If there were ever a man who was am bilious to be President it Is JAMES G BLAINE and there has never been a time in his history when there was better promise of the gratification of that ambition His party is united on him as never before It is generally recognized that he has completely com-pletely overshadowed the President and has injected every suggestion of brilliance that has appeared in tho administration His foreign policy is applauded and the reciprocity scheme which he is working so effectively is winning friends on all sides His refusal to exercise dictatorial authority asin tho past in local politics and especially in the matter of federal appointments has J also made him admirers So that on the whole Mr BLAINE is in a better position than ever to get what he seeks Does it seem likely that under these favorable fa-vorable circumstances he will step aside i and while denying to himself what he most longs for will answer with a negative the almost unanimous call of his party that ho will lead in the coming battle To say this of him is to say that his whole nature has undergone a radical change and that what once pleased him is now offensive It is to say that he is no longer ambitious in tho direction which he has been following for a quarter of a century and that he does not recognize the claims upon him of the party to whose successes ho has contributed so much We dont believe that Mr BLAINE will issue any announcement that will take him out of the Presidentinl contest and w e do believe that he will be nominated by acclamation ac-clamation We also believe he will be defeated de-feated by the same statesman who downed him seven years ago |
