Show THAT FORGERY CASE I Indict ments Returned Against I Driggs and Johnson I i THE LATTER GOES TO THE PEN 1i 1 i I William Freeman Charged With Unlawful Cohabitation AcquittedThe Cockrell Ca Business in tile Tollce Court i As foreshadowed in TUE HKIULD recently recent-ly B W Driggs jr and Alexander Johnson John-son the young attorneys have both been I indicted for forgery As stated when the I matter was first made public Johnson and I Driggs some time ago negotiated a note for a considerable amount signed by the former as principal and bearing Judge Hogesendorsement When tho note fell due and Judge Hugo was notified of his liability he denied having signed the document docu-ment and declared that it was a forgery Johnson says that he signed the note as principal but professes to be entirely ignorant igno-rant as to how Judge Hoges name came there and can only account for it on the ground that Drlggs put It there The latter lat-ter insists that if a forgery has been committed com-mitted Johnson must be the guilty party With such a state of facts as this existing the grand jury could only indict Doth men and it is understood that the indictments were returned I re-turned on Wednesday Johnson was arrested by Deputy Marshal k Mar-shal Goodsall yesterday morning He I stated that he did not wish to give bon sand s-and would go to the penitentiary and later on show up the rottenness of our t judiciary Before starting for the pen he l gathered up a big stack of law books from which it is inferred that be will continue his legal studies while a guest of Warden Vnndercook Driggs gave a bond when he was first arrested and as it is understood that it is a continuing bond b9 will probably not ho molested until he appears for arraignment |
