Show I AI GARFIELD BEACH Snap Shots Taken by a Herald I Kodak LIFE AT ztoNS DEEP DEAD SEA Health and Happiness for the Multitude if but the Accommodations Were as Adeanato as They Should DeUT De-UT at Garfield tbo other day said a welldressed gentleman as he t leaned back in a F f J comfortable chair tvvi at the Knutsf ord b I saw ono the i1 7 4 prettiest sights I ever witnessed in my life 11 had gone out on an early train 10 oclock in tho morning 1 think for I had been told that the mornings morn-ings at tho beach vvero simply dolghtful and I found as I stepped from the train that I had not been misinformed It was a beautiful morning the air cool and a certain cer-tain cleanliness seemed to permeate about everything I stood for some moments on tbo promenade near the ticket ofilco and vatched tho shadows of tho clouds chaso one another across the water whicu was first a deep dark blue and then changed to a beautiful green tint and I thought as I stood there with thoso grand mountain islands looming up so bold and what seemed so near I thought how little Salt Lake people realized what they had in that great body of water Well I suppose I would have bcei standing there yet had not a chorus of voices from down on the beach aroused me I walked down onto the pier and looking over the rail I beheld a sight that will always al-ways cling to my memory as one of tho prettiest pictures it was ever my fortune to behold There some scampering along tho beach others wading out in the shallow water pear the shore or kicking tbeir little feet into tho sandy beach were perhaps half a hundred children little tots ranging i I g 1J 1L iiLL V I f I S T S I s = = u from two to ten years of age carefully guarded by fifteen or twenty mammas and nurses and it would be a hard matter to tell who were enjoying themselves tho mostWell Well gentlemen I stood there for nearly near-ly an hour looking at that happy crowd below be-low me on the sand and I thought of my own little ones away back in a hot crowded crowd-ed city in the east and tried to picture them down among the children on the beach How many thousand mothers in the overcrowded and blistering cities might save their little darlings could they but have a place like Garfield to go to on mornings like that one on which I visited there Almost any pleasant evening the visitor at the beach is sure to see av jj = m TASSEXGEn AGrXT JJURLEr of the Union Pacific Ko man In Zion has more affection for Utahs little ocean than Col Burley and his presence these eenin sIs s-is not altogether due to official business Ho loves a good cigar and congenial companions com-panions and while not partial to the fair BOX he was never known to object to their company Every once in a while the kodak fiend gets out to the beach and pesters tho lifer out life-r every one about Sometimes u inougn no or sue gets nom 01 a auojcct that is perfectly willing to pose for a picture pict-ure One day last week TEE HERALDS kodak artist visited the beach and tried a snap shot or two Things went along very nicely for awhile and the artist had just succeeded in getting a shot at a couple of 1 I M 11t1Mj S S ZIOSS rAIn DAUGHTERS when tbfi very alert policeman who has of late become quite a terror to evildoers at the beach stopped up to the camera fiend and exclaimed Ill just give you two minutes young man to box up that internal in-ternal machine and get aboard the train Wo dont want no pictur dudes round here nor we aint going to have em neither seep Well Tim HERALD artist did get on the train and quick too but tho mischief which the guardian of the law had sought to prevent was already accomplished It is not often that Chinamon go bathing at Garfield yet two of these al moned eyed heathens the other day furnished fur-nished amusement for a couple of hours to an immense audience It was evidently their first swim at Garfield and hov tboy did enjoy it At first it was difficult for them to keep their heads above water but after a while one of them succeeded in his efforts to float and was so pleased with tho sensation that he remained out where the waves were running high for some time His partner found it more difficult however how-ever and contented himself with staying in where the water was shallow He enjoyed en-joyed it too as was evident by tho broad I grin of satisfaction that played over his ochre face every time a huge wave would roll over his pigtailed brother further out in the deep water I And so it goes Young or old well or inlirui breath vigor in the salt air and gain strength in the saline deep But the accommodations are inadequate Ton years hence the beach will be lined with fashionable fashion-able cottages the cars will make the trip over the broad gauge track m fifteen minutes min-utes and a mammoth hotel will try to accommodate ac-commodate the hosts of strancers that will seek benefit at the shores of the Great Salt lake |
