Show j IT WAS MOLLY FEVER I I The Cause of Dr H H Eldreilges I Suicide I I I SUFFERING A THOUSAND DEATHS The womans Whereabouts Unknown but 1 She Will Likely Turn Up to i Claim the Property i The suicide of Dr H H yidredge a full account of which appeared in yesterdays HERALD created quite a feensaUon Tho doctor sync very widely known hero and while he was boziuwhal eccentric no ono I thought ho was tho kind of a man who 1 tvouid take his own life Coroner Harris hold an inquest at thelato I rebirjeuco of tho deceased yesterday afternoon I after-noon Messrs C 11 Jackson J E Hau S ben and B C Ivins being sworn as jurors und after they had viewed the remains a number of witnesses wore examined I Dr Boer testified Last Tuesday morning I was sent for to attend Dr El i dredge professionally Ho had been ailing lor some limo and went down south on a trip and when ho returned about a week ago he was Buffering from typhoid lover On Wednesday last he was somewhat improved im-proved but was in low spirits and af tor wars made remarks to his attendants indicating in-dicating that he contemplated suicide Last evening I was notified that he had cut himself and at once camo to his place 3 found him lying in an enclosure In the yard back of the house suffering from a cut in the left wrist He had taken a razr and severed the radial artery He was very weak from loss of blood but was partially conscious and said that he expected expect-ed to be dead by that time It is nothing for a typhoid fever patient to attempt suicide and later on in view of his condition I might have anticipated something of the I kind but he was only in his first week Death resulted from hemorrhage Volney Leonard the nurse who was attending at-tending the deceased testified I came to the house last evening about 630 and tho folks told me that Dr Eldredge had stepped step-ped out 1 waited until nearly 7 oclock when I went out to look for him I found the door of an outhouse closed on the inside in-side and hearing a rustling in there I got a knifo and opened the door I found tho deceased lying on the floor in a pool of blood and by his side was a razor with which he had slashed his arm We carried him into the yard and the doctor doc-tor was called Ho was conscious but was very weak From remarks made by him it was evident that he had tried to commit suicide Airs Eliza Cook testified Tho doctor had bees suffering from fever for some days and was very weak yesterday On account of his physical condition and remarks re-marks that he had made I became appro hensive when he remained out so long last evening and sent Mr Leonard out to look for him He was found in the condition testified to I Rose Turner testified was sitting in the room with Dr Eldrodge yesterday afternoon I was mending some stockings and asked him if I should mend some for him Ho replied No I havoa pair on and they will last mo as long as I live Afterwards he said I am suffering a thousand deaths Hose I am suffering from iMoliio fever Mollie was tho nann o of his wife and afterwards h e said that when be died he wantei d his mother to write to her and tell her tha t a she was responsible for his death Alon g toward evening he got up and went inti o his olllce probably to get his razor The n he passed into the yard looking over hi s shoulder apparently to see if any ono wai s following him When ho was discovers d by Mr Leonard no was very weak bu dt was still conscious and said that h e thought he would oe dead before ho wa s found This closed the evidence and the jur y returned a verdict setting forth that th e deceased came to his death from the effects ef-fects of a wound inflicted by himself wit h a razor with suicidal intent while tern porarily insane The funeral will be held at the famil y residence JSo 17t northThird West stree t at 2 p m today Nothing has been heard from Mollie El dredge the wife of the deceased who exerted ex-erted such a baleful influence upon his life At last accounts she was in Chicago but when she learns of his death it is more than likely that she will turn up here and make a contest for the property which it is understood Dr Eldredge left by will t Ito his foster mother |
