Show The Irrigation Congress The general committee of arrangements held an important meeting last night The committee has extended invitations to 5iC mayors in the states west of the Missouri river to appoint delegates the mayor of each city to be exofllcio chairman of the respective delegations Two hundred and fifty receivers and registers of land offices and surveyorgenerals are also appointed delegates Two hundred boards of trade chambers of commerce agricultural and mechanical fairs and scientific societies have also been asked to name delegates The governor of each western state and territory has appointed 30 delegates himself him-self to be chairman and in all there will be about 4000 delegates named As the railroads have made a rate of one fare for the round trip open to the general public the indications are that Salt Lake city will receive several thousand visitors during the week of September 15 to 1 Every prospective delegate has received a personal letter enclosing a prpspectus of the congress together with a carefully prepared pre-pared pamphlet setting forth the attractions attrac-tions ot Salt Lake city and the advantages of Utah One thousand five hundred and sixty newspapers located in the cities from which delegates have been requested have been furnished with the prospectus of the committee and special articles on Salt Lake city and Utah East of the Missouri river 2900 agricultural agricul-tural and other societies interested in the congress has been arranged with for special articles The several railroads interested in-terested in bringing people to the congress have distributed thousands of posters calling call-ing special attention to Salt Lake city and Utah Every effort possible will be used to induce in-duce the attendance of every delegate named and to attract as large a number of people as possible who are not delegates I is not yet distinctly known whether the congress will be held in tho theater or the Exposition building For the entertainment of visitors the railroads have agreed to give onethird rate for side trips from SaltLake City and return The beet sugar people at Lohi want them to visit their factory and seethe see-the operation on the first beet sugar crop raised entirely by irrigation Members of Congress and all departmental depart-mental officers of the government interested inter-ested in irrigation have been invited as also representatives from the leading daily and illustrated papers The railroad rates are one fare for the round trip good three days coming and three days returning with stop over privileges privi-leges while the limit will be to September 30th from the starting point Tickets from Colorado and western points will boon bo-on sale September 13 President Simon has received the following follow-ing letter from San Francisco Fred Simon president chamber of commerce Sait Lake City Utah DEAl Sin It is important t a proper con sideration of the subject irrigation in the region re-gion lying west of the Rocky Mountains that I some statistical facts relating to the importation importa-tion of agricultural products be obtained TIc people of the eastern states are opposed to the development of irrigation on the theory thatthe fertilization of arid lands will bring a competing producer Into the field I Is asserted as-serted by the friends of irrigation that the practice of prac-tice agriculture increases the demand for eastern products May I request at your hands information as to where the statistic lelating to Utah may be obtained Is Utah a surplus producer of agricultural cultural products and therefore an exporteror Is it an Importer of Hour grain pork beef fruit and other Held orchard and agricultural products If the facts are at your command I would be pleased to be furnished with them I they are not I should be very grateful for the address of some one or some department ot territorial ter-ritorial government which would furnish this information This will be handed to you by my friend Hon Thomas Marshall Yurs very truly Signed WILLIAM I HARRIS |
