| Show FISH IX UTAH LAKE II I The Imported Varieties Appear to Be Flourishing There Salt Lake City Dec 6 i To the Editor of The Herald Dear lrI have just received the following Provo Dec 4 1893 A Milton Musse Esq Fish Commissioner Commis-sioner Salt Lake City Dear Sir Having understood that you were desirous to get specimens l of the different Imported fish planted in Utah lake by you some time ago we send you onea sunfish we think r They are doing splendidly Any further information we can give you will be furnished with pleasure Respectfully yours I yoursUTAH FISH CO I This specimen is plump and meaty jvhiUi proves that Utah lake is a good T nursery for fish raising Not being fully satisfied that the sample sent me belonged to the sunfish sun-fish family I asked Dr Talmage to please identify it which he has kindly kind-ly done as follows Dear SIrThe fish received from 1 you this day for identification I return herewith In my opinion it is a well developed specimen of lepomis gibh sus known in the eastern states and particularly par-ticularly in New Enrland by the popular pop-ular name of pumpkinseed and sunny r sun-ny It is perhaps the best known and certainly the handsomest of the extensive V exten-sive family of sun fish It Is abundant abun-dant in th3 brooks of New England and is generally found wherever perch abounds but its occurrence In Utah is I think an unusual thing Its flesh is highly esteemed for food and bye by-e some considered superior to that of the 4 perch It is thought much of as t I I game fish Trusting that this information will answer your purpose and with the best of wishes I am yours very truly J E TALMAGE It will be remembered that in November No-vember 1890 I received a consignment of fish from the Illinois river which I dumped into the lake at Pleasant Grove The consignment consisted of croppies redeyed perch lack l bass and sun fish just as they wer6 netted from the river A number r of nsiwrtiien inform me that they are o ll 0 t b f i3 f a 11 multiplying rapidly which is very gratifying grat-ifying intelligence as these fishes are among the very best for the sweetness t sweet-ness of the meat bonelessness gaminess gami-ness and their rapid multiplication I Next year I expect to put into Utah lake Bear lake and the Weber and Se vier rivers a consignment of white I ish fry The value of the white fish is too well known to need comment at f this time In the near future I am promised a liberal consignment of impregnated im-pregnated lake trout eggs from the east If any of your readers would like a few of these eggs I will gladly supply sup-ply them by sending me their post office address nearest express office etc Respectfully yours A MILTON MUSSER |
