than last year In the Second Third and Fifth precincts pre-cincts there was no opposition whatever what-ever to the nonpartisan candidates and very little interest was shown by the voters of those precincts The only real contest was in the Fourth where a number of selfap pointed Republican leaders exerted themselves to elect Glendinning the Republican candidate who was put in the field at the eleventh hour over Toronto To-ronto the nonpartisan nominee They found it difficult however to awaken 1 any enthusiasm among the members of their party who looked upon them as bolters and took no trouble to conceal con-ceal that opinion These leaders however how-ever worked assiduously throughout the day and by making unwarranted claims as to their strength deceived a good many people into believing that the election was very close SQ that there was more or less excitement at the polls throughout the afternoon When the judges got to work however the claims of the LiberalRepublicans were speedilydissipated S Theie were but 701 votes cast and of that number J B Toronto received 121 and James Glendinning 277 the formers majority being 147 The election in the First precinct was held at the Ricketts building H S Laney being the Democratic candidate and R AUf the Republican The Liberal Lib-eral heelers were out in force as usual headed by Jakey Greenewald and Col William Showell This contingent worked hard all day while the Democrats Demo-crats were apathetic and as a consequence conse-quence Mr Alff had an easy victory There were 940 votes cast Mr Alff receiving re-ceiving 613 and Mr Laney 303 the formers for-mers majority being 310 In the Second precinct S B Wester field received all of the votes cast 351 In the Third 233 votes were cast and of that number J E Hansen
