| Show A FEW FACTS TIlE CASE There Is one funny thing about the Republican howling over Hawaii they I dont know anything of what they are yelling about And now they are mad because the Presfdent doesnt lighten their darkness If they can only wait awhile perhaps they will get hold of something substantial to find fault with At present lhey are shouting themselves hoarse over their own imaginings im-aginings i There are a fewfacts that should be known but these are not suitable for Republican manipulation so they are evaded Among them are these There has been a scheme ajnong certain cer-tain interested patties in this1 country 6 j tI 1 and in Honolulu to annex Hawaii to the United States The natives were not concerned in this scheme but it was confined to a few of the White population The announcement that the Queen was about to submitplans for a change in the constitution of the country was made the pretext for a revolt by the annejkationists Minister Stevens was let into the plot and when the outburst was mac landed United States marines who were massed as a menace to the government gov-ernment to be overthrown As soon as the Queen learned of the opposition to her plan about the constitution con-stitution abandoned it The Royalist party were Intimidated by the presence of United States forces and on demand abdicated under protest pro-test until her cause should be submitted submit-ted to the United States government The provisional government was only recognized temporarily and until the proffer of annexation should be acted upon The people of the Hawaiian Islands were never consulted as to the establishment estab-lishment of the provisional government govern-ment There has been no vote of the people concerning it There is nothing Republican about it The annexation proposal has been rejected re-jected The queen has sued for redress The government of the United States investigated in-vestigated the particulars learned that the Queen had been deposed under improper im-proper use of United States authority and proposed to undo the wrong thus perpetrated upon a friendly power The Republican organs with a few alleged Democratic papers have raised I the cry that the administration aims to overthrow a republic and set up a monarchy There is no truth in the pita and no sense in the outcry I It t is a pity that there is 110 cable to Hawaii so that the papers so anxious to give the administration a black eye may have something substantial to throw at it or to put into their own mouths as a stopper against further fulminationg The latest argument of the howlers about Hawaii Is that the queen is ignorant ig-norant and licentious It is not worthwhile worth-while to question the truth of the assertion as-sertion It has nothing to do with the case If the United Slates government wereto aid in the deposition of every government the head of which was reputed to 10 immoral ft would have an onerous task The plea only shows to what straits the carpers against Cleveland are reduced for an excuse for their noise Just the same with the i attempt to show that the queen is not in the dear line of descent or comes of a bad family Whether true or false it is entirely outside of the question of right justice and the duty of this government The whole course of the opposition to the administration has been factious and conducted a spirit of faultfinding faultfind-ing The prejudices of the populace have been played upon and the object has been not to prOmote the welfare of the people ofHawaii but to injure the administration in this country and so reflect upon the party of which it is the representative That is the shame of the thing It is miserable work and reflects 410 credit upon its promoters |
