Show daysA A LOBBYISTS STORY Jim Legate Is Before a Kansas Legislative Legis-lative Committee His Evidence in Relation to the Charges That High State Officials Were Bribed Defeat Legislation TOPEKA March 21The senate committee com-mittee investigating the charge of bribery by the Capital of high state officials to defeat certain antigambling bills in the recent legislature continued today After Af-ter a number of witnesses had given unimportant un-important testimony James F Legate was sworn He said There was a conference con-ference with reference to the organization of the legislature I looked over the list of members and from my knowledge of the men and the canvas there were at least six men who were counted in I was told that W J Buchanan received 15000 or 520000 from the Kansas City whisky men for a number of years Pete Klein told me that gamblers were compelled for the last two years to contribute con-tribute 10000 a year to the Republican party of Kansas In the late campaign I told him i he would lend me 80001 would buy a paper and I would get him I protection from this demand Klein liked the idea so did the whisky men llked whisk Meanwhile the men who I had canvassing the state came in and told me they would I get eight or ten Republican members of the house to vote with the Populists on organization HI wanted t pay the men and told Pete Klein I wanted 0 I said he would be reimbursed by the Populist party He gave mea check for 3000 and this I paid to the men My judgment is it cost the railroads 4000 to get those four men to sign for Douglass Later on Judge Doster told me three democrats ould go into the Populist house as soon as three Republicans would make the break I sent word t Klein before that I was going t get the bill through de stroyinjj the policy business legate explained that he paid 5 to secure three Republicans to vote with the Populists S the Democrats however would not Join the movement Failing to get the Republicans t break he sought t get Populists in the Republican house Klein will testify before the commission tomorrow He declares the most sensational sensa-tional testimony is yet to come |
