Show UNION PACIFIC SHOPS Fifteen locomotives Built Last Tear Over a Thousand Men Employed The Union Pacific shops in Omaha made a great record during the year just clased Fifteen new locomotives were built during the year 171 were treated to general repairs and ninelysix with light 1 repairs Of the fifteen new engines now I in active service built at the Omaha shops twelve belong to the eightwheel class two are ten wheelers and one contolida tion More engines were built in this city during 1S92 than in eIght years previous on the entire system which shows that the Omaha built engine is meeting the requirements re-quirements of the different roads composing compos-ing the system and the design of Mr Mcconnell superintendent of machinery to build as many engines as possible here indicates the class of locomotives being turned out While the work in the machine shops indicates a broad policy on the part of those who direct the fortunes of the Union Pacific the achievements in the car shops are just as notable in their way as in the engine rooms Two hundred and fifty cars have undergone general repairs re-pairs been painted and varnished and do signed for the passenger service coaches mad and baggage cars Besides this 59U freight cars were repaired in the repair re-pair shops and in the foundry 15000000 pounds of iron castings have been made an average 45000 pounds every working work-ing day which have been distributed over the entire system It has taken 13S5 men to accomplish this work as least that number was employed during the month of December against 1318 a year ago This record reflects great credit upon Mr McCl nell who is one of the ablest supermi dents in the country and untiring in his uorts to elevate ele-vate the standing of his men and improve the physical condition of the road iatf way News Reporter |
