Show J1STIC1 J LAMAR IS l DEAD The End Was Sudden in the Extreme HEART FA1LUBE THE CAUSE Last Evening He Visited With an Old Friend At 8 Oclock He Was Siezed With Violent Pains in His Heart and the End Came in a Few nc Minutes MACON Ga Jan 23 Associate Justice ot the Supreme Court L Q C Lamar died here tonight Death was sudden in the extreme for since the justice has been here he appeared gradually gaining in strength This evening he visited for some time with his friend Dr Llewellyn and just after the doctor left the house about 8 oclock he was seized with violent vio-lent pains in his heart and died in a short time Gangrene with pectoris was the direct cause of death and given by physicians as being a complication in the caseLucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar associate justice i of the United States Supreme 06nrt was born in Putnam county Georgia Sept 17 1825 received his early education in Oxford Miss and was graduated from Emory college Georgia in 1845 studied law in Macon under his uncle Hon Absolom H Chapell and was admitted to the bar in 1847 was adjunct professor of mathematics mathe-matics in the University of Mississippi for a time entered upon the practice of law at Covington Ga was elected to the legislature of that state in 1853 was elected a member of Congress in 1857 and served until 1860 when he withdrew to take part in the Secession convention of Mississippi was colonel of the Nineteenth Nine-teenth Mississippi Confederate infantry participated in many engagements with the army of North Virginia was compelled com-pelled to leave the service by ill health was sent as a commissioner of the Confederacy Con-federacy to Russia in 1863 at the close of the war in 1866 accepted the position of professor ot Political Economy and social Science in the University of Mississippi the following year was transferred to the chair of Constitutional and Municipal Law and Government Science in 1872 was elected to Congress and reelected in 1874 was elected to the United States Senate and took his seat March 5 1877 was appointed t ap-pointed Secretary of the Interior March 5 1885 and filled that office until 18 fled ofc unti appointed t ap-pointed Jan 16 1888 to his present position posi-tion to fill the vacancy caused by the i death Georgia of Justice William B Woods of Bishop Phillips Brooks BOSTON Jan 23 Bishop Phillips Brooks died here this morning of heart failure brought on by a violent fit of coughing He was taken with a sore I throat Tuesday but the malady was not I considered serious till yesterday when i the physicians discovered symptoms of I diptheria Another physician was called in consultation but the patients condition condi-tion did not seem alarming This morning morn-ing however without warning he had a sudden fit of coughing and the heart ceased to beat Owing t the contagious nature of the disease the funeral wU probably be private The death of Bishop Brooks which came as a shock to a multitude of friends and admirers has called forth expressions expres-sions of deep personal sorrow from clergymen cler-gymen of all denominations and people in all walks of life to whom the bishop was an ideal man and preacher A meeting of Congregational ministers this afternoon after-noon adopted resolutions highly eulogistic eulo-gistic of the deceased bishop and Joseph Cook and others present paid eloquent tributes to the dead preacher At a meeting meet-ing of Universalist Baptist and Methodist adopted Metho-dist ministers resolutions were also Dr F S Dickman FORT SCOTT Kan Jan 23Dr F S Dickman editor and publisher of the I Western Medical Journal died today |
