Show TIlE WOOL QUESTION Wool men who read and think are getting the dust out of their eyes thrown there by Republican high tariff sophistry They are becoming convinced con-vinced that it is folly to say a high duty on wool raises the price of the domestic article The facts and figures of the wool market are dead against it Not only Is wool selling in Utah for seven cents a pound while the duty on foreign wool is eleven cents a pound but home wool has always beenl lower as the tariff was made higher Here is the argument used by Senator Sen-ator Allison some time ago when he wanted to take a different position to that his party now occupies in relation to the tariff It has been published before be-fore but it will do to print again be cause It is a Republican admission as I to a Republican tariff I allude to the wool tariff a law the effect of which has been materially to injure the sheep husbandry of the country As the law now is the tariff upon fine woolsof a character not produced pro-duced in this country is 100 per cent on their cost Before the tariff of 1867 our manufacturers of fine goods mixed foreign fine wools with our domestic product and were thus able to compete successfully with < the foreign manufacturers manu-facturers of similar goods But being prohibited from importing this class of wools these fine wools cannot be produced pro-duced in this country as cheaply as they can be imported Consequently mills that were formerly engaged in producing these goods have been compelled com-pelled to abandon business or manufacture manu-facture the coarser fabrics If they could afford to manufacture these fine goods they would make a market we do not now have for our fine wools to be mixed with other fine wools of a different character from abroad The want of a market as I understand it is the reason why our fine wools now command so low a price |
