Show THE ASSASSINS KNIFE Once again has the knife of the assassin as-sassin been used to strike down a man In a high place Once again has the whole world cause to mourn over the actions of an anarchist in Paris At 9 oclock last night Marie Fran cois SadiCarnot President of the French republic received a wound near the heart that proved fatal a short time afterwards The president who was thus struck down was born in Llmboges in 1837 He received his education at the Polytechnic Poly-technic school and the School of Bridges After his graduation he held minor offices until 1876 when he was elected to the chamber of deputies from Beaune and became its secretary secre-tary In 1878 he was appointed undersecretary under-secretary of public works and in 1SS2 minister of finance He held this position posi-tion until 1886 when he was made president of the French republic succeeding suc-ceeding Jules Grevy His term of office would have expired ex-pired on December 4th next There was scarcely a probability of his reelection owing mainly to the reflections that were cast upon his name growing out of the great I Panama canal scandal although it is generally admitted that the accusations against him were unjust Brilliant in oratory i magnetic in person per-son M Carnot had the faculty of calming agitation and reconciling diverse and hostile elements such as is possessed by few men Americans especially will be rieved at the tragic end of M Carnat and for more khan one reason The deed Is a blow at republican institutions and as such cannot but be received with the deepest regret The itiaking off of the president however how-ever will not it is believed hinder the spread and growth of republican ideas in France Unlike others of his ilk the assassin of Carnot refuses to assign any reason for his awful deed but it is evident that he had had the matter in mind for some time as he arrived at Lyons but a few moments before his steel sought the heart of the president |
