Show THE ° CHOPS IX 3IARCII I I Sections That Suffered from the I I Blizzards Washington April 3The monthly I I I crop bulletin issued by the weather 1 bureau says that unusually warm I 1 o weather prevailed during the first three weeks of the month during which occurred oc-curred the highest temperature recorded record-ed in March since the establishment t of the weather bureau over a large L area in the southern and middle Atlantic Atlan-tic states This warm period was followed t fol-lowed by the most decided cold wave of the season which carried the lined line-d freezing weather southward to the Gulf coast and caused frost which I proved injurious to fruits and vegetables t vegeta-bles over the central valleys and eastern i east-ern states The last decade of March 1894 was characterized by the most remarkable re-markable temperature extremes that I have been recorded since the establishment establish-ment of the weather bureau Within six days over a large portion of the country east of the Rocky Mountains both the highest and lowest temperature tempera-ture yet observed during March were reported Concerning these remarkable periods of high and low temperature special bulletins were issued by the weather bureau Special efforts have been made to determine the extent of damage le suIting from these frosts and freezing weather and show that not much damage dam-age hat been done in New England New York and Pennsylvania In New Jersey Maryland Virginia North and South Carolina and resrgia I early fruits and vegetables ire greatly p damaged and in the more southern I states entirely killed 1 In Florida the crops were only slightly slight-ly injured no harm being done south Of Gainesville Mississippi crops retarded but not seriously injured I Louisiana and Texas fruits suffered in norther portions and crops barely retarded Arkansas garden vegetables and all fruits except late apples killed i Tennessee and Kentucky fruits ruined Y ruin-ed gardens damaged wheat and oats L not generally damaged Missouri fruits greatly damaged L early vegetables killed I Illinois and Indiana reports very conflicting Fruits seriously damaged if not killed l Ohio early vegetables killed fruits t believed to be safe k Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota Colorado Col-orado Montana New Mexico Washington Wash-ington Nebraska Iowa and California C no damage Kansas and Colorado fruits badly Ii damaged |
