Show POPLAH FARM The Country Kusidciice of Bishop John R Winder Poplar Farm the country residence of Colonel John R Winder is pleasantly situated in the southern suburbs of Salt Lake city A large portion of the farm is reclaimed alkali land When purchased it was strongly impregnated with saler atus or alkali and the land was considered consid-ered of little value at that time The I first forty acres was purchased in 1860 for JoOO which was considered a big price I Other lands adjoining have since been i purchased and the farm now consists of I 110 acres all under cultivation A fea I ture of the farm is its flowing wells No I I purer water can be found than comes j > from them For many years some of the finest cattle and horses raised in the territory I ter-ritory have come from Bishop Winders farm His horses and Jersey and Holstein i Hol-stein cattle have often carried oh the 1 prizes at the territorial fairs j Bishop Winder has taken great pride in making the territorial fairs a success He was elected a director of the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing society in 1856 Some years after he became its president and held the office until 1890 I thirtyfour years of continuous faithful service His exhibits at the yearly fairs have always al-ways been large both in horses and cattle and agricultural products I A country home like Poplar Farm with j its pleasant surroundings and many acres of fertile land is a home to be proud of I |
