Show BINGHAM BOOMS The Old Reliable Well Deserves the t Name I A Solid Camp That Has Made Very Substantial Sub-stantial Progress in the Year About to Close Of the various camps of Utah Bingham Bing-ham population considered will undoubtedly un-doubtedly make the best showing this year of all 1 While there has beer reason for some I I mining sections to complain of dull times because of the depression in the price of I the precious metals Bingham has forged steadily ahead True her progress during I dur-ing 1892 has scarcely been as rapid as in 1891 yet the residents and mineowners I iu Bingham surely have no reason to complain of the results attained Bingham is located high in the Oquirrh I range of mountains and about twenty T five miles to the southwest of Salt Lake I city I It is the oldest camp in Utah the West Mountain mining district having been organized on Sept 17 1S63 by the soldiers sol-diers under the command of the late General Gen-eral P Edward Connor A Gardiner of West Jordan was elected recorder at the I time a position that is no filled by B B Quinn who is to Bingham w hat Pooh I Bah is to The Mikado in a great many I ways The troublous times of 1864 are probably II prob-ably well illustrated by the following excerpt ex-cerpt from the bylaws of the district lEach company must do one faithful I days work on their claims each month after the first day of April 1861 a failure todo so the claim will be jumpable provided i pro-vided however that if the company ara prevented by local insurrection or rebellion I rebel-lion from working a failure to do so will not forfeit their claim I The reading of the above paragraph to a number of the miners of Bingham lately I produced hearty laughter and at the same time it brought to the mind of one I of the oldtimers man who had made i and lost several fortunes in the campthe I fact that Bingham was the only mining I camp in the United States where a location loca-tion had been made entirely by ladies THE WOMANS LODE I Among the records of the West Mountain I Moun-tain mining district in a book that is badly battered by ageappears the following I follow-ing SOTWE Ttomons Lode We tho urdersigncd is not known but was undoubtedly near Bingham The lady locators were evidently evi-dently the wives and lady friends of the officers then located at Camp Floyd ATTRACTS ATTENTION While there was a vast amount of earnest ear-nest work done hundreds of claims located lo-cated and a great deal of ore shipped between be-tween the date of the organization of the camp and 1872 it was not until the latter year that Bingham attracted much attention atten-tion in Utah and the town was then comparatively unknown outside of Utah From 1872 however until the present day Bingham has been a steady producer of the precious metals adding many millions mil-lions to tho wealth of the world BINGHAMS PECULIARITY 1 Bingham is essentially a upoor mans campthat is the formation is such that as a rule but little money is needed to work the properties Millions of dollars have been made with OL going beneath the grassroots grass-roots This was noticeably the case with the Old Telegraph and it can be safely said tnat there are more what would be called pocr men making a living out of the mines of Bingham than in any other camp in the world When mining properties pro-perties famous the world over for their great shipments shut down because of a depression in the price of the precious metals the miners of small means keep delving away and sending down to the smelters in the valley their modest shipments ship-ments which are pretty surely to at all times reward them with a competence The comparative absence of water large bodies of lead and silver ore and accessibility accessi-bility to the railway are other reasons why Bingham finds favor in the eyes of mining men of moderate means Without With-out disparaging the efforts and enterprise I of the big companies which have done J 7 much for Bingham said Recorder IJariiey Quinn in a recent interview there are fewer large companies and more individual owners in I Bingham than in any other camp in Utah and this from my experience exper-ience is a very desirable state of affairs Bin mines and mammoth corporations are at all times welcome but it is the individual delvers in the soil that pays well who make up the prosperity of a mining camp IMPROVEMENTS VERY GENERAL The improvements made in Bingham during 1892 have been numerous andsub stantial Many new residences and several sev-eral business houses have been built adding add-ing greatly to the appearance of the camp and the convenience and comfort of the visitor The Humphreys Milner concentrator con-centrator in Main Bingham near the depot de-pot is one of the substantial evidences of Binghams progress It was erected in August last and six men are now kept bus running the plant which has a capacity ca-pacity of about forty tons per day Many tons of ore that heretofore could not be shipped are now concentrated there and made marketable A tram way is now being be-ing built to connect the mouth of the Petro tunnel with the ore bin of the concentrator con-centrator The Dixons new hoisting works costing cost-ing several thousand dollars are in close proximity Tho new hoisting works of the old Jordan and South Galena built to replace f re-place those destroyed by fire four months ago the old Telegraph hoist and the mill at the Stewart No2 are also among the improvements that go to mark the advance ad-vance of Bingham during the year BINGHAM AND RAILROADS I The Rio Grande Western is now the only railroad reaching the camp but there is every good reason to believe that it will not be a great while before the Union Pacific Pa-cific will come in for a fair slice of the mammoth business of Bingham A survey which would take the Union Pacific railway past the rich mines of Carr Fork and into Upper Bingham at least four miles nearer the big producers of the camp than the present pres-ent terminus of the Western was made t over a year ago and it is believed that a few months will see the Union Pacific heading that way The Rio Grande Western cut into our exclusive business at Tintic said a prominent Union I Pacific official lately and there would bet be-t no violation of railway etiquette in our II road retaliating and forcing a division of the Bingham business Retaliation > aside however the business alone would I justify the Union Pacific in at once build to the Old Reliable Camp of Utah SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES Bingham has two regular public schools and a catholic church the latter erected during the present year It is a very neat little house of worship Binghams population pop-ulation is about 2000 BINGHAMS COPPER STREAM Bingham has a curiosity in a stream of clear water so strongly impregnated with I copper that the metal is readily collected by the immersion of old iron to which the pure copper clings The stream emerges from the base of a precipitous mountain and all along the creek in the bed of the canyon in Upper Biugham are strong indicrtions of copper which someday some-day will be an important industry in Bingham Little if any copper has yet been produced here experiments being conducted on a very small scale so far but arrangements will be made early in 1883 by which a strong company will do extensive prospecting in the canyon and considerable development work on claims already taken up and which have most excellent indications THE CLIMATE Unlike that of most of the mining camps in Utah the climate of Bingham is mild and equable When the snow is afoot a-foot deep in the valley but a few inches will be found in Bingham while the temperature tem-perature is usually the same Bingham has direct communication by telegraph and telephone with the entire territory Two hotels do a fair business and there are several public halls secret society buildings etc OLD JORDAN AND SOUTH GALENA Among the heaviest shippers not only in Bingham but in the whole territory z is the Old Jordan and South Galena which was the firstlocation made in Biugham and which has produced its millions It i is connected with the mill by a tramway four miles long the empty cars are hauled to the mine by mules and being loaded I descend by gravitation It is very likely that the mule motor will soon be superceded super-ceded by a steam motor similar to that now in use at Park City and elsewhere THE BROOKLYN is also a heavy producer the average output out-put beine over 253 > tons a month The mine is also connected with the Lead mill j I by a tramway operated in the same manner j j man-ner as that of the mine above named One i advantage Bingham has over other camps in the territory is that her tramways are I I I I rarely snowbounda consideration when I I I one takes into account the probability of a blockade of three months in a majority of our miningcamps THE CORAMA DEL CONSOLIDATED is composed of three claimsthe Lookout Grand Cross and Mary The group is next to the Petro which has lately produced I I pro-duced some very valuable ore and there is every reason to believe that this ground which was opened less than two i years ago will yet prove to be one of the heaviest producers in camp Up to date I nearly 25000 has been paid in dividends THE OLD TELEGRAPH one of the most famous mines of the west which has produced millions is now being j be-ing worked by several leasers and regu j lar shipments are now being made Beyond Be-yond this no information is obtainable A hoist has been put in and a mill to work the dump IS among the earliest possibilities THE DALTON an old property which has been worked in a plodding way for many years by J T Schenk has at last rewarded its owner a strike rich in high grade native silver having been lately encountered and it may be classed hereafter as one of the best mines in the whole district THE BUTTERFIELD The Butterfield Mining company has spent many thousands of dollars during the present year in developing a group of claims in the Black Jack country A tunnel tun-nel which when completed will be at least 3000 feet long will tap the Queen one of its richest of a group of properties at a depth that will pay heavily and increase in-crease the output of the camp heavily THE SAMPSON in the Lead Mine gulch was purchased by Georgo Arthur Rice A E Hyde John Beck and others eighteen months ago Since the new company obtained control hundreds of tons of ore have been shipped and a great deal of development work done with indications growing more favorable every day THE YOSEMITE NO2 another of tho old mines of the district that has produced its hundreds of thousands thous-ands in years gone by and produces as regularly as the days roll by is under the superintendency ot Ed Egan It has attained at-tained a depth of nearly 1200 feet and is one of the best mines in the great west Its output has been enormous and the end has not by any means been reached The Yosemite is fully equipped in every particular par-ticular Under the same management virtually is the Yosemite No1 which is shipping steadily a small force only being worked THE BADGER is located just below the famous Brooklyn Brook-lyn and there is a general belief that it is on the same vein It is equipped with a small steam hoisting works and has shipped a great deal of ore in years gone by The shipments this year have been very heavy and have fully justified the faith of its owner THE LUCKY BOY owned by the millionaire miner L E Holden is now under lease to H G Gregerson and is steadily shipping Asa As-a rule the ores run much higher than the average of Bingham THE ROUGH AND READY is owned by John Tiernan and is under lease to Mike Gibbons It has been a wonderful producer in years past and fully keeps up its previous reputation It has produced some very fine concentrating concen-trating ore and a man who erects a small mill near by will make a fortune THE SILVER ZONE AND GRABALL once owned by David Kay and others have been absorbed by the Old Telegraph company No work of moment was done during the year HOLDEN SILVER GAUNTLET has come to the front during 1892 In years past the mine has produced millions mil-lions and there is every indication that its former brilliant reputation will be reestablished I established The Gauntlet and June Blossom are both leased to and being operated by Mike Klopenstine and that he will soon be clipping coupons there can be no doubt THE TIEWAUKEE another property that in the past has produced pro-duced its millions is now under lease to Peter Johnson and has made a most excellent ex-cellent showing during the year The prospects have not been brighter for years pas than they are now THE HIGHLAND is one of the biggest and most reliable mines in the camp is being worked by I four leasers and is sending down concentrates con-centrates at a lively ratea pace very satisfactory to the owners Messrs Frank Hoffman Henry Denhalter and others THE NORTH LAST CHANCE has developed remarkable bodies of ore and has made a remarkable record in many ways for the year 1892 The development devel-opment work has also been pushed to its utmost limit while the mill is kept going night and day New rolls were lately put in A cyanide mill is being put in at THE STEWART NO 2 and great results in so far as the reduction reduc-tion of low grade gold ores go are expected ex-pected It is claimed that a greater portion por-tion of the low grade gold ores of Carr Fork can be reduced at a handsome profit by this process and if this be so it means very much for Bingham as there are thousands of tons of such ores now lying on the dumps of the various mines that will be converted into double eagles in avery a-very short time I THE PEABODY in a quiet wayso quiet that it is impossible im-possible to obtain even an intimation of the amounthas sent out ore by the carloads car-loads during almost the entire year The Peabody is one of the big shippers of the past with a great future before it LiThe Petros owners have done agrsat amount of development work in 1892 and have shipped on an average 70 tons of firstclass ore a month besides enough concentrating ore to keep a mill running THE DI ONto ON-to use the language of an enthusiastic miner is a daisy A new stem host costing 10000 has lately been added and development work pushed The close proximity of the Dixon to the concentrator con-centrator saves a great deal of money usually expended in a haul down the canyon THE MONITOR which has been under bond and lease to Campbell Pitts Pritchard will soon be purchased by that firm A mill on the cyanide pattern will be erected early in the spring there being in the estimation of the firm a sufficient quantity of food lore in sight in tne mine and on the dump to guarantee this move It was the Monitor that caused such a sensation in mining circles a year or so ago by the rich gold strikeTHE THE I x L has made no shipments lately but the leasers Farrington Kilburn are taking tak-ing out and sacking large quantities of ore which will be stored away until spring THE NORTHERN CHIEF belongs to the Butterfield Mining company com-pany but is now leased by Gavin Wilt who are sending out 50 tons a day of high grade ore THE TURNGREN GEOUP is one of the newold properties that promise to do much for the camp in the future The group consists of the Bully Boy Irish American Bonnie Blue Flag and one or more other claims A rather heavy shipment recently made to the concentrator con-centrator turned out so well that work will be pushed all winter and a great deal of development done THE NIAGARA GROUP consists of thirteen mines and some of the properties it is confidently believed be-lieved will ere long be able to stand alongside the Old Jordan and South Galena Ga-lena The great Niagara tunnel when completed will tap a number of claims at a depth of from 500 to 2000 teet THE VESPASIAN a new candidate for honors in Bingham is working a big force of men and has made frequent rich shipments It is now under lease and will probably soon chance hands THE JULIA S AND LONE TREE are owned by Stephens Cleary They are both new mines but every indication points to success The tunnel is now in 225 feet and there is stored away to be shipped in the spring 400 sacks of 70 ounce ore Work has been or soon will be closed for the winter THE MOHAWK GROUP recently incorporated is worked by John A Van Pelt The claims adjoin the famous Winnamuck and are considered excellent property They are being developed de-veloped by a tunnel which it is believed will cut several very valuable ledges THE AMANDNA AND STARLESS which have produced much good ore in the past are owned by George E Lee and L C Jeffry A tunnel is being run to tap the vein at a point below the old workings and the coming spring will doubtless see the mines on the shipping list THE MINNIE is located near the Petro It is being worked by McAllister brothers of Salt Lake with very fair results THE BLACK DOG is owned by W J Strickley and John Burrows It has made several shipments and is considered one of the future great mines of the camp Yeadon s Heath of Salt Lake are tle owners of THE FAIRVIEW upon which considerable development work has been done and some shipments made during the present year It is situated sit-uated in Markhamgulch and will doubtless doubt-less ere long be reckoned among the best of the small mines in Bingham THE MONTEZUMA has four feet of good ore aud is noted as being among the regular shippers in a small way and as one of the most promising prom-ising properties in the West THE WELLA AND THE YORK have been consolidated Some small shipments have been made but attention has mostly bean confined to development work which has proceeded very satisfactorily I satis-factorily and with promises of good results re-sults I THE TILDENS Gebhardt Davis of Salt Lake own the Tilden No1 and Tilden No 2 No1 is under lease and both mines make a most excellent showing t THE MORNING STAR is under lease and bond to HF Sampson and there is so much faith in the property that a sale for a big figure is now pending pend-ing THE EDA is under lease and bond for 10000 A recent strike will probably be the means of consummating the sale THE VENICE The Venice No1 and No2 owned by Jarrard Hopkins Guiliana are worked through one tunnel Only a small force is now engaged however Assays show as high as 66 lead THE PEARL AND LITTLE RAY are in the Black Jack locality close to the Queen and Lucky Boy There has I been a great deal of development work done The ore now in sight is high grade very similar in character to that of the Queen and Lucky Boy A United States patent has been secured and the owners believe the two mines will soon be heavy producers RATTPTTS Goon CLAIMS The Old Clipper Jersey Blue and Rob Roy are in Cottonwood gulch and are owned by Ed Rauch They are under lease and bond for a large amount Development De-velopment work done during the year has made evident the fact that further explorations ex-plorations will show mineral of great value ANOTHER CONSOLIDATION The Benton Nash and Saturn have been consolidated and are being developed de-veloped by a tunn el 1500 feet i n length A Peterson is the lessee He has made several sev-eral large shipments during the year The output for 1893 will be moro than double that of 1892 THE FRISCO has paid very handsomely in years gone by and is now under lease to parties who have the requisite energy to push the mine to the front once more THE ALAMO is owned mostly by Salt Lakers It is one of the new properties of Carr Fork and is being developed by a tunnel 550 feet long This it is believed will strike the ledge at a depth sufficient to allow the extraction of the ore at a comparatively small expense ex-pense compared with the operation of a hoist Assays recently obtained from Alamo Al-amo ore are gratifying in the extreme THE GREEN GROVE I owned by Sessions Herson Henry has a large quantity of firstclass and second class ore on the dump Surface improvements improve-ments consisting of a boarding house and other conveniences have been made during the year and 1893 will sea the Green Grove among the best shippers of the camp THE EAGLE BIRD is situated on the divide between Black Jck and Highland It is owned by Hon M F Arnett and others and has yielded very fair ore It is now closed for the winter THE LIVE PINE group is now under lease and bond and the manner in which the property is being be-ing worked shows hpw strong is the faith of the owners therein Development Develop-ment only goes to show that it toomust be ranked as among the future great properties of Bingham THE SILVER SHIELD is owned by John Tiernan and though comparatively quiet at present owing mainly to the depression in lead and silver sil-ver it will yet bo heard from and in no uncertain tones THE JOSEPH can hardly be said to belong to Bingham It is situated on the divide between Cot tonwood gulch and Pine canon part in Tooele and part in Salt Lake county It is owned by Stevens Jarrard Quinn The work done so far has been small but a vein similar to that of the Petro has been discovered THE GREAT WESTERN on York Hill is one of the best prospects to be found in the camp A great deal of work has been done and with results that are decidedly gratifying to the owners THE BIG GIANT owned by Hazelgrove Kirby is under bond and lease for 10000 and is being steadily worked Quite a number of surface sur-face improvements have lately been made THE BROAD GUAGE owned by W C Hall and others which has been quiet for some time past will again be started up early in 1893 It has been a great producer in times past and will soon again be quoted as a shipper THE THRUSH which is in close proximity to the Tie waukee is owned by Stevens Cullins Several shipments of steel galena first and second class have been made during dur-ing the development the past year THE LEADVILLE is a comparatively new claim Considerable Consider-able work has been done in the way of assessment as-sessment and development and the outlook out-look is all that could be desired It is owned by Stephens Jarrard Lancina THE PARNELL owing to litigation is silent now This mine was formerly known as Mormon Nell and oldtimers of the camp are not yet through with telling the story that it was out of ore from this property that Tom Linden got his ramous assay of 135 per cent lead THE MINERS DREAM is in good company being immediately I below the Sampson It has been a wonderful I won-derful producer of very high grade ore in the past and is now under lease Jones Garnick The litigation that has kept back the development of the property having ceased it will saon be ranked among the big shippers and add very materially to the prosperity of Bingham THE EVERGREEN is famous as the mine in which Mullett Davis made their big strike a few years ago It is now being worked again after a silence of some time and will soon be found among the regular shippers THE U AND I has made several shipments during the year and the owners believe they have a good thing in sight THE CROWN POINT is one of the best prospects in the whole camp Work was abandoned on account of water about a year ago but a pump having been put in work will be pushed from now on There is good gold ore insight in-sight and plenty of it ROGERS MILL John Rogers who has been running a onestamp mill in the gulch immediately below the South Galena and other big mines has increased his capacity to five stamps and is handling a great deal of tailings and other refuse out of which he makes a very fair profit THE HIGHLAND is now working about lortyfive men and can justly lay claim to being one of the big producers of the camp All of the first class ore finds its way to the smelters in the valley while the second class product pro-duct goes through the Niagara concentrator concen-trator THE COPPER CLAIMS The copper claims of Bingham are numerous nu-merous and will some day show a surprising sur-prising richness So far as gold is concerned con-cerned the district has barely been scratched The output of Bingham for 1S91 reached 138475783 pounds There will be but little falling off in the showing made in 1892 |
