the City So That the Waterworks AV111 Have to Me Sold The usual weekly meeting of the Labor trust was held last evening in the Wasatch building with an attendance attend-ance of about 300 members President CR Berry called the meeting to order and after the minutes of the previous meeting had been reacl and approved JJ W Rogue was called upon and in a short address advocated the free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 He thought the demonetization of silver ver had been the direct means of making mak-ing tramps and millionaires A letter of apology from Captain rMiddemiss for not being present was read after which a recess of ten minutes min-utes was taken to give an opportunity tothose who had not previously signed the roll to do so THOSE WORKING ON THE SEWER A committee of three from the Work ingmens association waited on the meeting and the spokesman Mr Rogers made a statement to the effect that he and others had been out to seethe see-the sewer and tried to find out what were the terms on which they had been employed He had seen Mr Doremus out there and that gentleman had expressed ex-pressed the opinion that the contractors contrac-tors could not under the law compel the men to work ten hours a day and that he thought the contractors were imposing on the men in attempting it Mr Wilkerson one of the contractors had stated to him that some of the members of the workinpmens committee commit-tee had offered to sell the people they represented if the contractors woUld pay them 1 per week One member of that committee who made the proposition propo-sition Wilkerson said was Colonel Boyle and there were others who had also intimated that they would like to < get 1 a week for a similar service The speaker said he entirely discredited discred-ited the statement especially as far as it applied to Boyle In this connection H L R Jones made a statement the effect that he had been out to the sewer and hade had-e n two old residents Mr Deming and Mr Birkner and they stated that out of the hundred men working there not more than siX could b < > identified as bona fide residents of Salt Lake Yesterday afternoon continued Jones the men at work Demanded to be informed in-formed whit wages they were to get and were told by Mr Hobson another of the contractors that those who were wprth 150 per daywin l get that sum those worth l7p0 would get proceeded pro-ceeded to ratify thq < seer contract Therefore being again assembled and more than evejlmpressed with a aJ sense of the gt eVJImpesse action of your honorable bod is i inflicting on the fair name and fame of our city in theater the-ater of pushing the work of the gravity sewer in the face of the self evident fact that ft means absolute bankruptcy to the bity we renew our petition of one veslc ago and again beg you to retrace your steps recall your contract and let the work upon the gravity sewer be stopped at once and your pray petitioners will not cease to prayTO TO SELL THE WATERWORKS Mr Jones in speaking to the resolution said the city council was purposely pursuing a course which they knew would bankrupt the city Mr Mc Cornick was seeking especially to accomplish ac-complish this so that the city would be forced to sell the waterworks A storm of voices yelled out the waterworks water-works will never be sold Jones continuing said Mr McCornick was deserving of no more consideration than a pauper who was buried Ju the I potters field In conclusion < Mr one explained that he had no absolute proof 10f his statements regarding Mr rout Cornick r-out he had strong belief in their correctness A DEMAND Secretary Doxey moved that as the city council had seen fit to ignore the petition presented to j them last we k that the present petition be put in the form of a demand Carried AX OFFICIAL ORGAN John Witbrck said the Argus weekly paper had done good work and faily represented the laboring men He therefore proposed that the Argus be made the official ten or twenty to act with a like committee from his association as-sociation to go out and induce the balance of the men working on the sewer to quit A motion to that end 1 a put and carried and the
