Pacific company is arranging ar-ranging all the passenger coaches on its lines with an air contrivance by which a small whistle in the cab of an engine is caused to sound a warning to the engineer that he shall stop the train says the RecordUnion The air whistle whis-tle will take the place of the bell cord now in use on trains and the change is made on account of the unreliability of the gong to sound in the engine cab when the bell cord is pulled especially on long trains The whistle is used by a number of large railroads in the east and it will be but a short time before all the engines and cars of the Southern Pacific company will be equipped with i I is operated by pressing a button Ait Off Year For the Railway The cold facts in the case when reviewed re-viewed in all pertaining to railways clearly show this to be an off year for them The great coal strike that has been carried on in twenty of the states depression in western mining industries together with calamitous floods and an occasional strike have been the direct means of so heavily telling upon their earnings A little figuring shows that 129 roads in the United States Mexico and Canada Can-ada fell off in their gross earnings for the month of May 7780000 or 171A per cent Those roads embrace about onehalf the entire mileage of the three countries Other months were bad enough but May nocked them out completely In April the same roads showed a decrease of 148 per cent in March 13 per cent in February 125 per cent and in January 124 per cent For the first five months of the year these roads showed the tremendous of1 loss or 29 7S0000 as compared with the same period in 1893 And yet that loss can safely be put at 60000000 to the IOads in the United States as there are many great systems not included as they have not yet made their earnings public pub-lic Among them are the Erie Baltimore Balti-more Ohio Reading J high Valley Lackawanna Lake Shore Michigan Central Chicago Northwestern Burlington Bur-lington Union Pacific and Southern Pacific And the month of June will be fully as disastrous for them as was May but after that time there must come a change for the better The coal strikes will be ended and orders to replenish exhausted coal stocks will be brisk The crops will then commence com-mence moving and merchants will again commence to load on goods All told the railways are about to get out of the woods and to the utter relief of railway managers whose days and nights have been filled with trouble and anxiety Conductor Want Their Staff uf A great number of conductors who went out on strike on the Lehigh Valley Val-ley some time ago have filed action against the Order of Railway Conductors Conduc-tors to recover 10000 which they claim is due < them as a strike allowance allow-ance There were fortyseven actions In all The papers were duly served upon Grand Chief Clark but he < made no answer to them and on June 18 judgment by default was entered He has now engaged counsel to defend the suits and the case will be reopened Railway men will watch the proceedings proceed-ings with interest and The Herald will give the details later on showing on what grounds Mr Clark refuses to pay over the stuff Railway Notes Ray Raymond takes a run oyfer to Grand Junction today on Rio Grande Western No 2 General Manager Dodge < of the Rio Grande Western leaves for Denver
