Show STEVENS AND ADAMS BOTH HELD TO AWAIT THE GRAND JURYS ACTION Fritz Ricjicn Discharged The Burglar Bur-glar Investigated Before Police Justice Smith Other Business Disposed Dis-posed Of Harry Stevens was yesterday held to the grand jury on the charge of burglary bur-glary in bonds of 1000 by Police Justice Jus-tice Smith and H BAdams the hack driver who conveyed Stevens and his plunder to the residence of Fritz Riep en will also go before the jury on the same charge He was held in bonds of 250 Unser Fritz was discharged dis-charged The charges against Stevens and Adams Ad-ams were investigated at the morning session of the court The attendance I of habitual police court p ctators was unusually large the court room and within the bar being crowded The story of the burglary and the subsequent subse-quent storing of the stolen suitings in Riepens house has already been told several times in The Herald Adams disclaimed all knowledsrft nf thE cnm mission of the crime and alleged that he was simply hired by Stevens to take the latter and some things to Riepens He did not witness the burglary I was developed however that he had taken Marshal Pratt home several hours after his engagement with Stevens and maintained the strictest silence regarding the entire matter The justice decided that the evidence justified him In holding both men I Riepens case came on at 2 oclock I The attendance of spectators was just I as heavy as at the morning session The evidence of the prosecution was I the same as in the other cases and Fritz was then given an opportunity of telling his story He declared that on Saturday light Stevens whom he knew well had approached him on the street and asked if he might store some cloth which he had taken on a debt at Ogden in Riepens house Fritz gave no direct answer but remarked to Stevens he would see him later about the matter Between 9 and 10 oclock that night someone knocked at Riepens door and when the latter opened the door Stevens Stev-ens was standing on the porch with an armful of cloth Without a word he dumped the bolts on the hal floor and returned to a waiting hack Fritz went into another room for a lighted lghted lamp and upon his return to the door Stevens was again there with another armful of cloth With the remark Good night Fritz I will see you in the morning about this Stevens threw his second load onto the floor returned foor retured to the hack and drove away Having no other alternative Fritz gathered up the scattered bolts of cloth and placed them In the closet where they were found by Detectives Sheets and Rhodes i After the arguments of counsel had been made the court held that the evi dence was insufficient to hold the de fendant on the charge of receiving stolen property knowing it to have been stolen and discharged Riepen William Myers and Bert Lucas the alleged surething men were not arraigned ar-raigned and are still confined to the I city jail |
