Show THE CULMER ESTIMATE APPROVED BY THE BOARD Ot PUBLIC WORKS But Engineer Doremtis Refused to Sign It Other Business Transacted Transact-ed nt Last Xishtj Meeting The board of public works held its first meeting for two weeks last night there being present Messrs Noble Haines Wells Caine and Clerk Dull Acting under instructions from the city council City Engineer Doremus submitted the final estimate of the CulmerJennings Paving company The I estimate calls for 2601064 There has 1 previously been paid on the work 126 j LD6S2 Engineer Doremus refused to sign the estimate and withholds his I usual l certificate In explanation of this the engineer says in a accompanying I accom-panying communication the omissions I were made on purpose a he has no other way of appearing upon record in opposition to issuing a final estimate for any public work that is either defective de-fective of incomplete under the terms of the contract Mr Doremus contends con-tends that the work of the Culmer Jennings people was not done according accord-ing to contract and cites the present condition of the paving as one of the proofs of his statement The former board held the Came opinion as the engineer and refused j to give a final estimate on the work Not desiring to take a hand in the matter the members of the present board decided to submit the papers in the case including all communications from the paving company and the engineer to the city council The later lat-er body referred the case to an investigating I in-vestigating committee and upon the recommendation of that committee the council ordered the board to at once furnish an approved final estimate When the matter brought mater was up last night the members with the exception excep-tion of Mr Caine argued that the acton ac-ton of the Council had taken the case entirely out of their hands and there was no other alternative than to transmit trans-mit the estimate back with the ap jroval of the board riot forgetting however to bring to the attention of the council the fact that the board ap proved the estimate only under instruc tons from that body The city recorder notified the board of the reductions made in the salaries of the members by the city council Noble moved that the members at once proceed to reinstate them This sally wa received with laughter Up6n the recommendation of the city attorney the petition of John Buckle for a refund on his assessment for stone curbing was granted Several petitions of a like nature which had been presented to the city council were received from the city recorder and referred to the proper committee The third partial estimate for sidewalks side-walks in favor of Frank Harrigan amounting to 88485 was presented by the engineer and approved Two bills presented by the Union Pacific for the services of watchmen at the crossing of the gravity sewer aggregating ag-gregating 228 were referred to the city council and the board adjourned after allowing a number of claims |
