Show REGISTRAR COHEJPS CASE Chief Justice Merritt has denied the application for a writ of mandate to compel County Registrar Cohen to furnish fur-nish a copy of the registration lists to the Republican committee Nothing else was to be expected nothing else could have been done Everything has been charged against Mr Cohen and nothing whatever proven In the language lan-guage of the Chief Justice Complainants S Com-plainants have brought in a whole parcel of charges which are not supported sup-ported by a scintilla of evidence not a single attempt to support them For weeks past charges of the vilest character have been made against the Registrar by the Republican party not that there was any foundation for them or that they themselves believed them but for the sole purpose < of creating prejudice and raising suspicions out of which they hoped to make some small political capital Not only have aspersions asper-sions been cast upon Mr Cohen but they have also been cast upon the Utah Commission and with the same object in view In every way known to political polit-ical tricksters the Republican party has sought to make the people believe that the Commission and the Registrar were V bent upon having an illegal and unjust registration made for the purpose of giving an advantage to the Democratic party and depriving many Republicans of their elective franchise to accomplish accom-plish this felonious design Bigger nor more wicked lies were never uttered The Republican party the party of pelf plunder r and protection set up the preposterous claim that it had a right to a copy of the registration lists if they but paid fOr them Itinvoked its foundation principle when It did this the very life principle of the party the principle that anything can be bought in politics and that it is the right of those who have money to pay for it to purchase it It Is the theory on which John Wanamaker got into Harrisons cabinet and from which the blocks of fixe doings of V Dudley in Indiana came V V V Mr Cohen has never refused single It o 1 VW I V I i v < 1 V 0 f man the opportunity to see If his name were on the registration lists both that I for the Delegate election and that for the constitutional convention election And this the Republicans knew What they wanted was the power to dictate and mutilate that Is all The Chief Justice says statements are made in argument that certain testimony testi-mony is given which In fact is not offered of-fered An attorney who would do I that is not fit to practice before the courts of his country and his case should be investigated by the Bar association asso-ciation with a view to having him disbarred dis-barred V The Chief Justice is severe in his language concerning the complainants and Chairman James but not so severe se-vere as the facts in the case warranted war-ranted They brought trumped up charges against the County Registrar and when it came to the proof of them they offered no evidence whatever The villainy of the whole scheme has been exposed and those who concocted it shown to be a set of marplots We congratulate Mr Cohen and the public pub-lic on his vindication by the Court It is a triumph of law and decency over wouldbe violators of law and champions cham-pions of indecency |
