Salt Jake City For years he was connected innumerous numerous ways with the Union Pacific railway this city working his way step by step through sher force and energy to the responsible ana honorable position of agent of tho Salt Lake station This position posi-tion he held for several years afterwards being teller at the Ddseretbank and when two years ago an Independent county ticket was put in the field he was selected for the office belies filled so well and acceptably ac-ceptably overcoming the Liberal vote by avery a-very fair majority He was nominated by the Independent Workincmens party and also by the Peoples party No fulsome flattery needs John H Rumel jr His record re-cord Is before the public As an officeholder office-holder he has been the same faithful servant ser-vant of the pepple as he was when in the j railway service and other positions QUSTAVE II BACKMAJT Gus ave H Backman the nominee for county clerk was born in Guttenburg Sweden May18 1861 He came with his parents to Utah in June 1877 Heattended the Fifteenth ward school and afterwards the Desert University in 1S85 to 1186 After completing his education he took a trip to his native land where ho remained for two years He was deputy recorder under George M Cannon and now holds the same office under Mr Rumel In his early youth be was engaged railroad and other work He is known as a staunch Democrat a man to bo trusted He has a high business reputation a1arge tax payer and has the welfare of this city and county very much at heart Ho did not seek the office to which he was nominated It was a case of the office seeking tho man DAVID C DDNBAR The candidate for assessor is a product of Utah Ue having been born here about thirtythree years ago Ho is a son of W C Dunoar esq oho of the founders of THE SALT LAKE HERALD For a number of years ho was its business manager and afterwards settled in Omahu whore he remained re-mained several years being actively connected con-nected with a Ibis publishing house Salt Lake however proved to be more attractive attrac-tive than Omaha and ho returned here to make it his future home He has been an active worker in the Democratic cause and is very popular That he has all tho quali ficati ns necessary for the proper handling of the office for which ho has been nominated nomi-nated there can bono doubt BYRON oTiOO For twenty years and more the candidate candi-date for collector was connected with this paper first as local reporter and afterwards after-wards as editorinchief For that length of time at least ho has been known not only by the people of Utah but of the surrounding sur-rounding states and territories as an uncompromising un-compromising Democrat warm friend of Utah and her people a man of sterling honesty and integrity man whom the Democrats and other good citizens of Salt Lake county will do well to place In tho collectors col-lectors office A L IIEASTON the Democratic nominee for sheriff is now 29 years of age having been born at Fort Herriman Salt Lake county March 19 1863 He comes from an old and very respected re-spected family his father being a native of Indiana and Mis i mother hailing from Illinois Illi-nois They came from Iowa to Salt Lake county In ISoSA Heaston pore died in 1887 leaving a family of mother and seven children chil-dren to be proyioTed for by his son now the candidate Heaston has followed the trades of carpenter and miner both in Bingham and Park City At the request of the citizens citi-zens of BIngham almost to a man Sheriff Burt made him a deputy and how well he has filled that office can easily be aeon when they want him to be sheriff of the county Heaston was one of the first three or four in Bingham who took up the division divis-ion movement and he stood manfully by the cause ho had espoused Bingham said Barney Harvey will give him a handsome majority on the 8th and he will be elected as sure as the sun shines l JOSEPH B TORONTO The candidate for treasurer is the present pres-ent incumbontj He was elected on the combined com-bined VVorkingmons and Peoples party tickets two years ago beating the Liberal I candidate by three votes Joe Toronto To-ronto as be is familiarly known I is one of the brightest and brainiest Utah boys For many years he held a chair in the Deseret Univorsityf now the Utah University and he filled it with the greatest great-est satisfaction both to the faculty and the pupils Toronto is essentially selfmade man That he is honest goes without saying say-ing and was remarked on the day of the convention when ho goes out of office ho will not have in his possession 20000 for which ho cannot account Mr Toronto is chairman of the Salt Lake county Demo cratio committee Thoroughly Identified with the city county and tarriorrys most vital mtereststio is the man that should receive the votes of aUwho derive peace progress and prosperity for the county RICHARD II CABELL The candidate for county attorney is ono of the rising young lawyers of the territory ter-ritory He was born in Virginia Oct 29 1856 received his education at the Nor woodhigh school and college that state He there studied law taking his first session In 1876 He was admitted to the bar of the supreme court of Virginia in 18S3 where be practiced his profession with success until 18SD when ho came west He was master of chancery in the circuit court of Nelson county Vs for six years He came to Utah in January 1S90 and affiliated with tho Liberal party He was one of the first to advocate division on party lines and Joined the first Democratic Demo-cratic club as soon as it was organized in May 1891 Mr Caboll has always been a staunch Democrat asa lawyer ho Is able ttnd honest sad thoroughly well qualified for the office of county attorney GIDEON A GIBBS The future county surveyor ia also a Utah product having been born in this city on the 24th of November 1S64 and lived here all his life From early youth Ihe has beetrengaged in tho surveying business busi-ness and is well and favorably known allover all-over the county Ho formed a partner hip some two years and a half ago with Mr McAllister the firm is McAllister Gibbs and none 4i6 bet known or more trusted in the surveying business Mr Ginbs is also secretary and treasurer of the Utah and Salt Lake Canal company and oft of-t ie South Jordan Canal company For two year ho was deputy county assessor under Ir W Pix and also for a subsequent period of two years held the office of deputycity surveyor He lass also held other positions of trust with John Labru selectman Is a very well known man In this county Ho is a native of England but came to Utah some twenty five years ago when a mere boy He now lives al Murray and is engaged in farming and stock raising His reputation as an honest straightforward honorable man isl well established and even amongst politicians 1 politi-cians of the opposite faith he is regarded as i eminently fitted for the office for which he has received tho nomination He has good sound judgment and a great deal of experience exper-ience of the world Ho is a strong candidate i candi-date and will poll many votes of
