Show OPEN TO SETTLEMENT Surplus lands of the Crow Indian dian Reservation About 1800000 Acres Now Beady for Set tlors Conditions on Which the Land Can Be Taken WASHINGTON Oct 15 President Harrison Harri-son this afternoon issued a proclamation opening to immediate settlement the surplus sur-plus lands of the Crow Indian reservation in southern Montana aggregating about cne million eight hundred thousand acres ceded to the government under the agreement agree-ment of Dee 28 1890 as modified by the agreement of Aug 27 1892 Under the terms of the agreements the ceded lands except mineral lands must ba disposed of only to actual settlers under the provisions of homestead laws except section 2301 of therevised statutes which gives to ex soldiers and sailors the benefit of the time they served in the army or navy of the United States provided however that a soldier shall before receiving a patent for the homestead pay the United States for the land taken by him in addition to the foes provided by law and wltein five years from the date of the nrst original entry the sum of 8150 per acre onehalf of which shall be paid within two years further provided that any person otherwise qualified who attempted at-tempted but for any cause failed to secure title in fee to a homestead under existing laws or who made entry under what is known as the Commuted provision homestead home-stead law shall be qualified to mae homestead home-stead entry upon any of these ceded lands It is further provided that all white persons per-sons who located upon the Crow reservation reserva-tion by reason of erroneous survoy of boundary and were afterwards allowed to file upon a location in the United States land office shall have thirty days in which to renew their filings In all cases where claims were located under the mining laws of the United States prior December 1 1890 by a qualified location who believed he or she were locating on lands outside of the Crow reservation such locator shall be given thirty days within which to relocate relo-cate a claim within the ceded lands of the reservation The ceded lands constitute the western part of the reservation which are opened to settlement except the mineral lands and about 300 Indian allotments which are reserved in the eastern part remaining in the reservation Big Rash to the Reservation HELENA Mon Oct 15A big rush to the Crow reservation was reported today from Billings Stillwater and other towns on the railroad About onefourth of the reservation can be made very fertile by irrigation Many homesteaders have been waiting for weeks to enter the reservation |
