Show tion well knowing it would not do to I add fUel to the flame then so fiercely burning I must preface t by saying that for the past two months I have been learning that the people o southern Idaho have been steadily looking forward for-ward to a tIme to comen time when they will gird up their loins and engage en-gage in a fray something akin to the one just waged in Montana Its a capital cap-ital fight and its billed to come oZ I when the alloted time is up Furthermore Further-more Pocatello is the city destined to reach out and take it in The Pocatello Poca-tello people have carefully considered the matter and have laid their plans to wrest the capital from beautiful Boise at the expiration of six years How do I view it > I dont view itI have no choice in the matter The people peo-ple though are entitled to whatever light I may be able to throw upon the matter in my own way Now for the light I am informed that according to the law governing Boise could not be deprived of the capital for ten years after the location of the same and four of these years Grave already gone glimmering glim-mering down the aisles of time leaving but six more until a stronger power may step in and walk off with the prize Clever people down south hero have figured it this way Boise is off on a branch line while Pocatello has superior railroad facilities to any other point in the state and when the reservation res-ervation is opened will take an additional addi-tional growth that will be truly astonishing as-tonishing The whole country roundabout round-about will be thickly settled and at the rate of settlement now going on in southern Idaho they will have the necessary ne-cessary votes They reason that while it will be a long ways for the people to come here from the northern part of the state yet it is a long ways for the people to go now from the southern part of the state up to Boise Again they argue that when you look at the map and observe how the state runs up to a peak inthe north anyone can see the wisdom of the peak coming to the base rather than the base going to the pak A careful canvass has also shown them that Idaho Falls will lineup line-up with Pocatello in the matter tha latter place is already and late great glorious glori-ous enough In all her surroundings to willingly aid her sister city and not en tel into any spite work such as is charged up to Butte on the late capital capi-tal fight in Mpntana I must say that the many arguments advanced in favor of the Gate City appear specious if not wholly convincing and be this as it may the public will witness n capital capi-tal contest as herein stated I the writer survives until that period he intends in-tends to perch upon a peak far off and watch tlhe fur flyfor fly it will POCATELLO PEOPLE AWAKENING Pocatello people are awakening now to the necessities of the hour as is evidenced evi-denced from the following attitude recently re-cently struck The chamber of commerce com-merce Is to be revived A meeting of the business men is to be called and a live energetic man placed at the head who will devote his time to looking af ter matters concerning the welfare of the city The initiation fee will too I placed sufficiently low as to enable every ev-ery publicspirited business man to join and take an active interest in the work I Mayor Ban will lend his every energy 1 to the work to be carried on and every one will aid in all that is possible and work together unitedly for the good of all If anyone sulks in his tent or through feelings of animosity seeks to tear down then will that class be out ion i-on the blacklist the while the work is carried on as outlined I NOTES AND PERSONAL I General Superintendent Bancroft and Superintendent Calvin in their special cars arrived from Boise this am and I went on through to Ogden where they I will meet General Manager Dckenson I and party who are enroute from the east In this connection I may add theres a hen on but at this junc ture Im bound to not state some things I know I W H Remington went south this morning possibly to Salt Lake C E Wantland of Salt Lake spent Sunday here Thos Orchard chief clerk of the railway mail service at Ogden washer was-her on business yesterday I Fred 0 J Klesel of Ogden is here I J M Daniels superintendent of the Pacific Express at Salt Lake is here looking after transfer matters The new time card No 40 that went into effect yesterday brings the trains inhere in-here much closer than on the old card a pleasing feature in itself T B Garham of the Rock Island 19 looking after his roads interests up in this sefstion I I s ton C M Bell of Salt Lake is here for a t i few days I Its surprising to check over the register here and note the great number I num-ber of Ogden and Salt Lake businessmen business-men that are here every day in the i week i i Real estate dealers report thirteen pieces of property turned last week and plans are out for a number of elegant ele-gant new homes I j The best news of all lies in the fact I that the Union Pacific will in the near future add to their already mammoth shops at this point and by keeping your eye glued to the situation as tho days go by you will be made to realize 11 ize that a great and prosperou future is dawning for this city Chicago capital capi-tal has already looked in with covetous eyes and the near future will carry i conviction of The Heralds forecast made on Pocatello three months ago I j Pocatello is liable to branch out as I the great country convention city of the intermountain I j The Irrigation Congress held recently recent-ly l at Denver adopted a plan under which the various state commissions are to call conventions and report to the state legislatures early in January 11895 plans for the proper utilization of I the million acres granted to each of the states in the arid region under the recent act of Congress known as tho I Carey law I Idaho is very much interested in this I action and some wideawake citizens I in Pocatello are of the opinion that S the state convention for Idaho ought S to be held here They claim that this is the most central and convenient location lo-cation for that purpose I ha also been suggested that there ought to bean be-an intermountain convention held just before the state conventions so that the very best ideas of the best informed ed men in the Intermountain states can be presented for the consideration of the local conventions I Pocatello will t > e the very best possible pos-sible location for this convention it is 1 claimed as it offers the necessary ac I comodatlons Being only a short ride 1 from the leading places in Idaho Utah 1 Wyoming and Montana very favorable rates can be secured from the railroads roads The high railroads rates to either of the large towns north south or west of here would prevent any large attendance This will be a great opportunity of course for Pocatello to show her enterprise in undertaking to call and pay the expenses necessary ire j taking care of such conventions But I I dont hesitate in predicting thai I this town is not only willing but able to take such a burden and carry it I through handsomely I The people of this place are great believers be-lievers in its future and this convention conven-tion business would give them a splen gve did chance show to the people of the I country the advantages of Pocatello and the entire state j The proceedings of an intermountain I intermoun-tain convention of this kind would ba I of national natonal importance I The chance which this Carey million acre grant gives to the new states must be improved to show that they can be trusted hereafter And if they use the grant wisely the development of the states so formed will be Advanced Ad-vanced materially and Congress can then be appealed to for further help in the work of opening up homes for the many thousands of people in other I states who are anxious to get away from the great cities and get back to I the land Pocatello citizens who grasp the opportunity op-portunity now suggested may well feel < that great benefits will result to their progressive city and the other portions of the state will surely turn in earnestly to make the convention successful I suc-cessful ant prove to the rest of tho country that Idaho is at last ale to I her opportunities RAY
