Show POLITICAL POINTS Will There Be an Election Held in February NOW AND TWO YEARS AGO Jleetlncs Under the Auspices of the Jefferson Clnbs Scandinavian Democrats Y II D Club Will there be a February election this year It looks as there were some doubt about it Mackays bill for massing elections is now before the committee on elections in the house and It is understood that nearly every member is in favor of reporting it back favorably This bill provides Sec 3That on the Tuesday after the first Monday In May 3693 and biannually thereafter rlllrn W there shall be held tin election in each city town village and school diiftrict in the territory to all offices of the same or pertaining thereto which by law arc or may be made electivp That the present incumbents of any of said offices may continue therein and exercise the functions thereof until the 1st day ii July 1893 and until their successors are July elected and qualified but not longer and their successors shall be elected at said May election 1S93 5 5 5 Tim all ofilcers elected at the May election as provided in tills act shall qualify and enter upon tho duties ol their cOleus on the 1st day of July tort succeeding tho election and contine in such oflloe for two years and until their successors are duly elected and qualified The committee on elections is made up of Sargent Mackay Allen Marshall and Colton three Democrats and two Liberals Whether or not the governor would sign the bill is uncertain but members of the legislature think the chances are in favor of his doing so since the bill would defer the next city election till May 1S93 and continue tho Liborals in power until July 11693 Somo people think however that his excellency would prefer to take chances on an election next month his hope being that Ancient Mariner of Politics R N Baskin will run as mayor Then too the governors party is anxious to see the three Democrats now in the council from the Fourth precinct replaced by good Liberals and they figure the City Creek colonization scheme will render this certain cer-tain So the governors action will be watched with much curiosity A Contrast Nothing sharper in the way of contrasts could be presented than the status of things political in Salt Lake now and two years ago Two years ago at this time the Liberals had held their city convention Scott had been nominated and John M Young was the god of the hour The Liberal Lib-eral convention was held on January 14 the Peoples which nominated Spencer Clawson on January 28 the monster I torchlight parades the clubs the mounted guards the expensive uniforms the bonfires bon-fires the bitterness the rancor the heart burnings all were at their height then compared with the quiet that reigns now when we are within three weeks of election elec-tion day provided of course that election isnt deferredand the difference is most striking In all probability there will never again be such a political campaign in Utah as that of two years ago certainly no Salt I Laker ever wants to behold it Home Rule and Democracy A series of meetings will be held under the auspices of the Jefferson club in the Twentieth Ward schoolhouse on Wednesday Wednes-day evening of each week beginning January 20 at 730 pm for the discussion of home rule and Democracy The first meeting of the series will be addressed ad-dressed by Judge H P Henderson Hon W H King and others Everybody invited in-vited J L RAWLIXS president D C DONBATI secretary Scandinavian Democrats There will be a Scandinavian Democratic meeting Monday January IS in Social hall at 730 pm for the purpose of electing the executive committee for tho club also other officers A programme has been prepared pre-pared that every Democrat in Salt Lake city will take pleasure in therefore we in vito all to attend C A CARL QUST president P J NELSON secretary The 1 M D C Through a mistake in tho date the meeting meet-ing of the Young Mens Democratic executive execu-tive committee was called for Tuesday instead in-stead of January 17 at 3 pm The members mem-bers are all earnestly requested to be present Tickets for the Y M D C can bo had at THE HERALD office of F H Dyer 2 Commercial street and at the Democratic headquarters |
