Show FORT DOUGLAS ITEMS Active Church Work and Inactive In-active Temperance Work I The ificaped Prisoner in the Post Hospital Put Freight Cars on the Electric Lines Enlisted Sioux Tho Catholics at the post appear to behaving be-having religious services quite often In our little chapel and many of the officers their families and tho soldiers manifest some considerable Interest in church services THE TEMPERANCE SOCIETY What has become of the temporaifce socii temporatce soc ety organization that did so much good for us a few years ago Can not some good Samaritan again tart it off We will give all tho assistance in our power and of course the society can have the use of ono of the dancing halls for its meetings SNOW AND SLEIGHING We have had over two feet of snow on the level the sleighing from the post to the city has been excellent for teveral weeks and oft at night we hear the jingling of the sleigh bells notifying us tnat parties are out from the city enjoying the fine moonlight moon-light drive AN ESCAPED PRISONER One of the prisoners jumped the guard last Monday Lot Rivers Company C but in attempting to board a freight train leaving the city he was rather severly injured in-jured and taken to tho hospital in the city One of our sergeants was sent for and tho warrior was returned to the post and safely safe-ly housed in the post hospital for treatment treat-ment ELECTRIC LIGHTS AND CARS Arrangements are still being pushed forward for-ward to givo us electric lights This will no doubt be economy to the government and to the officers in the camp Wo trust our quartermaster will not rest o nights till he rushes this mater through Steam heat is also coming but of course that will have to follow electricity in usual form Now we have two electric street railways ways to the post both starting from the same point in the city converging in different ferent directions but both have the same objective point The Salt Lake road has done some good service for us and i the Rapid Transit will do equally as good we shall bo well served and also see that these railroads are well patronized I may be a little dull now but eight months of the year both roads will have much to do to attend to the traffic Is it an impossibility to put on a couple of freight curs and transport the large amount of freight to and from the post the city and the depots I will be a bonanza to the road that accomplishes it ROSTER There are now about twentyeight commissioned Fort com-missioned Douglas officers and 500 enlisted men at SIOUX SOLDIERS Some thirty Sioux Indians have already been enlisted for company I Sixteenth infantry in-fantry at the Rosebud ageney and Captain Cap-tain Clapp is still there in charge of affairs Shall we take them to Chili CANTEEN A very large refrigerator is being put in the post canteon Lieutenant George has not allowed the grass to grow very extensively exten-sively in or about that institution and to state that it is a very popular resort for the soldiers will hardly do it justice GOOD HEALTH The troops and residents on the hill have been unusually healthy the past season one reason no doubt is because the winter has been colder and tne atmosphere clearer than usual and the ground covered with snow for over six weeks W |
