Show THE BOYS IN CLOVER Fortyfive Newsboys and the Fan They Had Colonel Lott sprung the idea of a dinner t the newsboys of Salt Lake a week or more ago and fixed upon Thanksgiving as the proper day on which to give it His idea was followed by the Grant Brothers company and the big Raymond coach with its richly caparisoned horses and attentive driver was turned over to them Then the Natatorium people came forward and told the boys that their immense establishment was open to their use at any time between 9 and 12 oclock The boys commenced t think they were in clover and wonder what would happen next when they were told by Colonel Lett that tickets for the performance of Called Back had been provided by THE HERALD and the company hoped that none would fail to call at the office ana get the pasteboards As indicated by the above procramme the days festivities opened at the Natatorium Natato-rium where the boys received every care and attention from the management and there were some lively scenes enacted An hour or so later the street In front of Grant Bros stables was thronged and as the handsome Raymond coach rolled out up went a cheer such a has seldom been heard from boyish throats The boys were soon aboard and went rolling around the streets of Salt Lake in a lively manner Cheers were given the boys as they flew along and the passing of each newspaper office was the signal for an outburst that would havo made a Comanche hide his head and a Ute t commit suicide For an hour or more the sport was enjoyed and the boys were monarchs of all they surveyed sur-veyed The boy whose par ntn have more earthly wealth than the t J j c T one who makes the streets ring with Heres your morning HERALD stood on the sidewalk and watched the happy crowd with considerable nvy The ride over the boys were next found in front of the California restaurant where they were met and cordially greeted by Colonel Lett and his son Will both of whom appeared to be enjoying themselves to the fullest extent The boys were given to understand that everything eatable or drinkable in sight was theirs and that there was a law which would severely punish those who were found to be guilty of slighting the repast Whether it was the appetite engendered by the bath and the ride the tempting fare provided or the fear of the majesty of the law was not learned but certain it is that the California restaurant never had a better bet-ter compliment paid to the quality of the food set before their patrons than was given them yesterday The colonel made a little talk to the boys and he was followed by Governor Thomas exGovernor West and Rev Mr Thrall iRe i-Re Ilifi offered grace and the tussel with turkey and other good things began When it was over there was a wreck The boys were then invited to call at THE HErALD for theatre tickets which they did and as the curtain fell on the last act of Called Back last evening the boys wont homeas thankful a set probably as ever were seen with the pleasures of the day still fresh in their minds and the invitation invi-tation to attend a similar spread next Thanksgiving ringing in their ears November 27 1890 will be a redletter I day with the newsboys of Salt Lake |
