Show The Snjrar Beet Industry Having given abrief description of the process of the beetsugar industry the question naturally arises how will the farmer reap the benefit of this industry It certainly cannot be expected that the community is to derive any special benefit if any of the wealthy refineries own and control these factories as they will to get their beets as cheap as possible The next plan that presents itself is co operation This plan alone will benefit a community in which a factory is located In this the business plan men of any town can cooperate with tho farmers and estab lish a factory In which the farmer and mer chant can be alike interested It is essen tial that enough farmers join in such an enterprise to insure a good SUpply of boots The actual working expenses of a factory including cost of beets should not exceed yj4 cents per pound of sugar produced and in time that amount will be reduced to 3 cents As 5 to 0 cents can be obtained wo have a profit of 2 to 3 cents per pound and 2 cents bounty making a total uf 4 to 5 cents profit In estimating the cost of factories we must bear in mind that the government duty on beetsugar machinery hasbeen removed re-moved making a difference of 45 per cent on the machinery or 23 per cent of the total cost of the plant Previous to the passage of the tariff bill the estimated cost of factories was 1000 per ton of beets daily capacity that is a zactory that could consume 150 tons of beets each twentyfour hours would cost 150000 at the present rate it should cost SU500 less B115500 The returns from 15J tons of beets should be not less than 12 per cent 21 tons of sugarat a net profit 630 and 5 bounty ofS40 making a total of 1470 and a run of 100 days would raise it to a total of S14T 000 in one seasons run Certainly no better paying enterprise could be expected Let each beetgrower own one share of stock for every acre of beets that he would con tract to raise and in a short time that community com-munity would feel the effects of having prosperous farmers for neignborsD It Chandler in Pacific Rural Press I |
