| Show Justice Millers Body in Keokuk KEOKUK la Oct ISA committee of citizens met the body of Judge Miller at Burlington and conducted it to Keokuk arriving ar-riving at 9 oclock at the depot The honorary hon-orary pallbearers and various commitee took the body in charge and it was escorted by company A Second regiment I N G Torrence post G A R the guard of honor and several thousand citizens The body was borne to the federal building which had been elaborately draped in mourning The casket was convoyed to the court room in which the dead justice recently presided and placed upon a handsome catafalque The face of the beloved jurist was exposed to view and during the few hours the body lay in state it was viewed by several thousand thou-sand people While the funeral services were being held public and private buildings were draped In black and presented a sombre appearance ap-pearance A high wind durng the early morning destroyed many of the dscora tions A along the line of march over Which the funeral procession moved fags were displayed at half mast Besides the distinguished gentlemen who accompanied the remains from Washington many others assembled here to pay the last tribute of respect the supreme court of the state was represented and large delegations of attorney from all the states included in the circuit presided over by the dead justice At 2 oclocK funeral services were hole in the Unitarian church of which deceased had been a member The church was entirely en-tirely inadequate to accommodate even a small portion of the crowd about it long before the doors were opened The funeral procession headed by the clergymen moved up the Central aisle followed by the pallbearers bearing the casket In a few minutes the family entered with Chief Justice Seevers members of the state supneme court and various bar delegations delega-tions There were many handsome flora tributes The burial service was read by Pastor Hassall prayer by Rev Mcllwai and sermon by Rev Hassall The funeral procession to Oakland cemetery was the largestever seen hereincluding officials and court dignitaries military and civil societies so-cieties fire departmedt and citizens ceties fre The hearse was drawn by four black horses The services at the grave were very simple and the body was lowered and covered from sight forever |
