Show nonE KECOBD I Last winter when esteemed morning morn-ing contemporary was telling what good and true men the Liberal nominees for councilmen were THE HEUVLD warned it that it was preparing a very nauseating dose for itself as in the event of the election elec-tion of the ticket the paper would have to eat many cf its words But the Tribune would not be warned It would not seethe see-the rocks upon which it was plunging Rich as is the language in adjectives the editor of our contemporary found it lean indeed in that respect when he desired to sing the praises of the nominees not one of whom could bo fairly criticised not one of whom did not represent what would be a first class man in any country not one of whom was not a business manfully man-fully identified with the best interests of the city The readers of the journal will recall that on January 12 an editorial ran as follows Our friends tho enemy affect to believe that the Liberal ticket so far nominated is a weak one Do any of them imagine that if that ticket shall be elected a future rand jury will one of these days be obliged to report that certain cer-tain of their official transactions give every evidence of having been dead swindles 1 Yesterday the Tribune said Mr JACK asserts that tho franchise was an open affair that all the world might have known about A good answer to that is that the mayor himself wlio made the motion on which the franchise was granted thought it was something else This shows how open frank and fair the whole transaction was Let us now ask the Tribune the ticket having been elected if a grand jury would be likely to report that a certain official transaction gave evidence of having been a dead swindle Our contemporary need not answer unless it wants to The statute stat-ute will protect it in remaining silent the law excusing one from giving evidence against himself But to return to the Tribune editorial of I January 12 The writer goes on to ask i Will the city be run as a public corporation corpora-tion the chief apparent object of which is to make private profits for the officers 1 On Thursday Jast the organ told about being abused for having notified the people peo-ple that four members of the city council were directly interested in certain pending pend-ing franchises On Friday the same paper said There are furious denials that no man in the council owns any stock in the Rapid Transit company We suspect sus-pect that a search would reveal that all the stock is in other mens names There are bookkeepers and bookkeepers And now it is our turn to ask the Tribune first again warning it that the il law of evidence will protect it in a declination de-clination to answer will the city be run as a public corporation tho chief apparent object of which is to make private profits for the officers 1 It seems to us as it will to the public that the managers of our morning contemporary contem-porary were guilty of inexcusable business busi-ness oversight during tho months of December January and February They should have suppressed the Tribune and thus escaped the deadly parallel column |
