Show JN THE GREAT tliffitOkOJISl Undo Views Some of the Sights Including John N Necls NEW YORK April 29 1160Special correspondence cor-respondence of THE HERALD Tho eastern east-ern side of Iowa presents a bright and bet ter picture There is some got up and the towns got better there are bteter street cars and electric lights and more solid buildings Burlington is a city of some pumpkins and dont you forget it We cross the Mississippi river on a bridge and plunge into that beautiful and lively state of Illinois There is no prohibition here but a square issue between Republicans Republi-cans and Democrats Both parties are bent on a long and strong pull as they are in Ogden first last and all the time They seem to bo almost another race of people bright sharp quick and broad Aurora tim city of watches and corsets and pretty girls and lots of them Here we are in the Union depot of Chicago Look out when you get outside the depot gates for toughs I You can see tho brand on them I once thought the city of Buflalo took the prize but I dc my hat to Chicago I saw this city when it had I a string town of frame houses on the shores I of Lake Michigan r now 1CCOCOO of as bright mell in business pursuit I took a visit to Marshall Fields retail dry goods estab lishment and was politely shown through every department and instructed in all its details This department has a book keeper superintendent salesmen sales women cash boys and delivery men etc to the number of 1750 people all worMne smoothly and quietly with no stiff red tape formality I did not have time to visit the wholesale departmsnt The Palmer house Michigan avenue and other places of interest lookup my time I could not help looking at the ladies with their sprightly walk good com plexions and figures all very pretty crea lures but Oh what feet I am afraid my friend Vf H Rowe would not like to make shoes for them at Salt Lake prices But they are pleasant creatures Dearborn Depot Here I met Jackson the great slugger one of the largest and darkest men I have seen for some time He is one of the last men I should have taken voice and sociable manners have but little of the brute which most of that ilk display On all ordinary flays at this depot 200000 passengers como and go through those gates the great bulk being local people living in the suburbs From thus place we take the night train over the Chicago Atlantic railroad one of the most interesting routes east passing through the iron works of Pennsylvania and the oil regions taking in its course New Jersey tliw solid little Democratic state New York city is reached via North river ferry What a change has come over the spirit of my dreams since my last visit in 71 The old streets aro still here but freshly dressed with new build logs six eight and nine stories Irish Broadway now extends for miles The wholesale houses of course are on lower Broadway but above Canal street for milcsj is one continuous string of beautiful buildings well stocked and brilliantly il luminated stores Central parkbut that will do So much has been written about this New York paradise that I will not attempt it now There are lots of Eves in this garden Madison sauare the great resort of sit and feed his sparrows I did not see George for he had taken the Train to father Nellie Ely around the world I saw lots of sparrows but could not tell which he fed Ivisited Johnny Barney of Tafft WellerCo J H Bradley of Dunham Buckly Co and our mutual friend Colonel John N Neels of St John Kirkham Co all of whom are polished gentlemen The proprietors of the houses which they re present speak in the highest terms of the manner promptness and straight forward ness of the business houses of Salt Lake Ogden Provo and other towns of Utah Theatres Barnums show and all good amusements are not far from hotel to bo my visited as my health doest permit me to bo out late Talking of hotels this one is situ ated on the corner of Fulton and Washing ton streets and is conducted on the Euro penn plan It has 473 rooms and can without extra cots sleep 530 people be sides 175 regular resident guests has 200 daily arrivals furnishes 12000 meals daily and on extra days has furnished 20000 meals It employs from 300 to 325 people in I the shape of superintendents of depart ments clerks waiters chambermaids etc UNCLE |
