Show Belle Bilton of Music Hal Fame Special to TIE HERALD Examiner Cable LONDON July Wertheimcrs conncc tino with a member of the Diinlo family has again been paraded beforo lie public It is a civil case entitled Richardson versus Wertheimer It is an action brought by Mr Richardson to recover the sum of 623 tho amount of a cheque said to have been drawn by the defendant Wertheimer in favor of Lady Dunlo better known in music hal circles as Miss Belle Bilton The cheque it is alleged was endorsed by Ljdy Dunlo to the plaintiff De ndant on the other hand pleads that both signatures to the cheque are forgeries Miss Belle Bilton and her sister were both in court Richardsons lawyer id opening the case for the plaintiff said that Mr Richardson was n silversmith and that he had from time to time lent money to a man named Alden Weston and Lady Dunlo then Belle Bilton and they become jointly and sever ally responsible for sums so borrowed On March 31SSS Weston was convicted of fraud in connection with certain forged bonds and was sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment with hard labor On his release from prison his relations with Lady Dunlo were resumed The first cheque given by defendant Wertheimer Lady Dunlo was one for 200 and was dated November 1 ISbO it was accompanied by the following letter in tho handwriting of the defendant Friday My darling Belle Tomorrow will bring you a cheque for 200 All my love Isatlore This cheque waspresented to Richardson plaintiff for the purpose of being discounted dis-counted but he thought it too large so another an-other cheque for 50 was brought tohimand he was asked to discount it holding it over for a certain time Eventually this cheque was cashed although its genuineness has I been denied Finally there was brought to Mr Richardson a cheque for 300 the cheque which forms the subject of the present pre-sent action This cheque was given to Lady Dunlo as a birthday present It was accompanied ac-companied by the following letter PKLICAN CLUB Dearest Belle I send by Herbert the cheque you asked for 300 which I have post dated the 15th proximo Please dont use unless by your own people Am at Cafe Royal dear waiting for you I have taken a box for the boxing competition for Flo and Billy This cheque was discounted by plaintiff but there having been some dispute about a previous cheque for 50 the west end branch of the Bank of England refused to honor it on the ground tat the signature differed from that which Mr Wertheimer usually employed Hence the present action ac-tion to recover 300 The evidence of the bank officers was taken The cashier employed em-ployed at the west end branch of the bank said that he was acquainted with the signature signa-ture both of Wertheimer and Lady Bunlo He believed the signature and endorsement on the cheque in dispute were both genuine |
