Show UTAH IS HONORED Delegate Caine Assigned to Three I Committees THE CHANCES FOR FREE COINAGE Crisp Appoints I Majority of the Coinage Committee Free Silver Men Watterson Scores the Speaker WASHINGTON Dee 23Special telegram to TCHE UERALD Speaker Crisp has treated Mr Caine very handsomely in the way of his assignments Mr Caine retains his former place on the postoffice committee which is one of the most important im-portant in the House while his assignment to the irrigation committee is regarded by Mr Caine as a decided compliment to Utah which was the pioneer in irrigation work Mr Caine has also a third assignment which places him on the Pacific railway committee He is thQ only delegate the speaker HAS HONORED WITH THREE ASSIGNMENTS 11 Harvey of Oklahoma has one assignment assign-ment that to the committee en Indian ment affairs Mr Joseph of New Mexico has but one territories while Mr Smith of I Arizona has only two mines and mining and prhate land claims Some days ago Mr Caine in company with Delegate Smith of Arizona had a conference with Speaker Crisp regarding the irrigation committee They explained to him the importance with which this committee was regarded in the western country and urged that some of tho far western men should be placed upon it and suggested either Dickson of Montana or Sweet of Idaho Mr Crisp adopted their suggestion and placed both the foregoing gentlemen on the committee and added Mr Came as well notwithstanding the latter maae no application for himself and had no expectation of being appointed Mr Sweet was also given a place on the public lands committee to wh < ch Mr Clark of Wyoming was assigned TiE COMMITTEE ON COINAGE I has a decided majority in favor of the free coinage of silver I consists of eight Dem cratic members four Republicans and one Farmers Alliance member Six of the eight Democrats the Farmers Alli ance member and at least one of the Republicans Repub-licans are for free coinage The decided opponents of free coinage are two eastern Democrats General Tracey of New York and Mr Williams of Massachusetts and two of the Republicans Mr Stone of Pennsylvania and Mr Johnson of North Dakota There is some dispute as to the position of Colonel Taylor the Republican member from Chicago He voted steadily against free coinage as a member of the coinage committee of the last Congress but showed some leaning in private discussion dis-cussion of the subject at the short session last winter in favor of a proposition to coin THE PRODUCT OF AMERICAN MINES I he votes against free coinage the committee com-mittee will stand eight to five in favor of the proposition Those who favor it however how-ever are among the most radical and earnest of free coinage men in Congress The six Democrats are Bland of Missouri chairman Williams of Illinois who was a member of the coinage committee in the last Congress Kilgore of Texas Robertson Robert-son of Louisiana Pierce of Tennessee and Eppes of Virginia Mr McKoighan of Nebraska is the Alliance member mem-ber and free coinage is one of the essential articles of his political creed The only Republican on the committee who is an aggressive champion of free coinage is Mr Bartine of Nevada He is one of tie most intelligent free coinage men in the House and all the I more effective in accomplishing results because be-cause he is not of the stamp of noisy demagogues dem-agogues He said this afternoon in dis cusblng the make up of the committee that he thought Speaker Crisp had acted in conformity with what he regarded as THE SENTIMENT OF THE HOUSE There is no question said he but what it will tend to promote silver legislation I may not be an out and out free coinage bill it may be guarded In some way to meet the fears of eastern men but tie acton ac-ton of the speaker means substantial legislation I leg-islation The time for smoothing the question has passed |
