Show THE LEGISLATURE It is noted that the bills are piling into the legislature at a lively rate although the respective houses have only just completed com-pleted their organizations This is a good sign suggesting that the members have been thinking ever since their election last summer of what was needed It also suggests sug-gests that the gentlemen are workers and are eager to get down to business The ambition is a laudable one and reflects credit upon the lawmakers But let us remark by way of caution that the community does not demand avery a-very great addition to our statute laws Some of the acts in the books need amendment amend-ment and some new laws are required but we believe it will be better if the legislature legisla-ture will not undertake too much Tho people are going to watch the assembly very closely The record made during then the-n xt sixty days will have an C1Iect upon the community in general and upon the Democracy in particular That record will be judged by the quality rather than by the amount of work performed If every bill whloh Is sent to tho governor is such a measure as will call forth the approval of the intelligent masses the effect will be excellent ex-cellent whilst if any bills give evidence of haste in their preparation and lack of due consideration not only will the members be censured but the Democracy will ben be-n held accountable We do not intend to be understood by this as intimating that all or any legislation should be partisan All laws must be fair and just and intended to meet the demands of the publio Our caution cau-tion is against wasting time over matters which are insignificant when all care and watchfulness should be given to the few measures which will go into the books as laws I |
