Show Cornelius Vanderbilt Speak t Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Jan 13The railroad branch of the Young Mens Christian association held its sixteenth anniversary meeting last night Cornelius Vanderbilt presided I is only once a year that Mr Vanderbilt makes a speech and that is at this anniversary anni-versary He does not pretend to be eloQuent elo-Quent He just stands up and reads what I he has t say with extraordinary distinct ness and precision He does not seem too to-o more embarrassed than he would be if I he did not have fifty or a hundred millions He said that the year lad been a more prosperous pros-perous one more than any ono had expected ected The membership our member ship he said had increased from 1847 to 2340 while the total attendance had been 469SO Then he called attention t the act that the doors of the building had never been locked since the first day they wero opened D W Robertson gave a tubleronicon solo That solo amazed and interested Mr Vanderbit It showed plainly what painful pain-ful thing it must be to be a rich man and unable to go to those places where they have tubleronicon solos He laughed and linked his eyes at Chauncey M Depew and the doctor smiled buck Then Mr Robertson gave 0 sleighbell solo and Mr Vanderbilt opened his eyes wider than ever He did not seem to know that there were such things in the world and every boy in the audience felt sorry for him Vhen the musician began tojlngle Yankee Doodle in astonishingly quick time Mr Vanderbilt laughed like a school boy In a second everybody was beating time Just as the musician gave the bells the final beatng Mr Depow clapped his hands high in the air and shouted Hooray Mr Vanderbilt erbilt remarked that no anniversary would be complete without the preseace of the speaker who was to follow Of course that was Dr Depews cue He arose and I cracked jokes for twenty minutes I |
